Double jump not always firing

Hey guys.

I'm posting this here since I main Captain Falcon, but it may not necessarily be related to him.

I'm having this issue where I'll be chasing a player off the stage and I'll lose a stock like a ****** because my double jump failed to fire. It can fail from a single jump to d-air, f-air, n-air; other times it'll work fine. It seems random. Is this intentional behaviour and I just haven't figured out the trigger?

I play online (since it's impossible to find time to get friends over) so I'm wondering if it's lag related? It's a ****ing abomination to play online here in Australia since you can't choose a region for matchmaking. If it's not with a japanese player, it must be someone from Europe or America. It rarely feels like an Australian. I'm actually curious if my inputs are just getting dropped, or if a single jump input is being duped, registering as having used 2.

Given I'm a newbie to playing "seriously" (despite having owned every iteration of previous Smash game) it's just impossible to get better when I can't time spot dodges, chain combos or nail follow ups. Plus I'm not familiar with the nuances of the game yet so I'm just guessing what's going wrong. Especially with hitboxes, the lag makes them feel almost non existent a lot of the time.

I'd love to know if this is a Falcon issue, a more general fighter nuance or a lag problem. Maybe someone else has encountered this. It's driving me mental and making me dislike the game.

Thanks, guys.

My first guess would be that you're running off the ledge and double jumping instead of jumping off the ground. That was tripping me up when I was testing something yesterday, and it'd be even easier to accidentally do in a laggy environment.

That did cross my mind and so I experimented with running off vs jumping off and discovered that running off only gives you a single jump. The instances where the 2nd jump has failed has been after a definite jump from a good distance from the edge.

Initially I thought it may have been cool down lag but after a few really obvious failures that had plenty of time to "recover" and get a second jump in it made me question cool down.

I thought Falcon had this odd glitch wherein he lost both of his jumps if jumping from close enough to the ledge. However, looking back on it, I don't know where to source this info from. I'm certain I read it somewhere, it's happened to me a fair bit...

No ****! I'd love to find a source on that. It would make me so happy that I'm not losing my mind doing something derpy or it's some quirky nuance with the Captain.

Edit: Here's a reddit link to a discussion. Looks like it might be real. :S

I'm 90% sure I've had it happen on both. I'm unsure if it happens offline or not since I mostly try to play online.

edit: made more sense.

Oh my god. I was losing my mind because of this. That made me really angry every time because I'm certain I didn't use my double jump and then suddenly I fall down looking like an idiot. Nintendo fix pls!

I really don't think there's anything to fix here... It really just sounds like you're running off the edge and wasting your jump....and this is how every character operates. You can always save yourself though since your "captain falcon just did a flip" alarm should be going off and you can realize that you messed up. If the whole, attack at peak of aerial, then FF elicits a lost jump, then it needs to be proven. Video proof or anything where it's clear only one jump off the stage was used.

The perceived outcome may be related to online input lag, but what is actually happening in the game is definitely just running off the edge first, making the jump you use to do your aerial your off-stage and therefore only remaining jump. My understanding is that Falcon is so fast that it's easier to make this mistake with him - so yeah, quirky nuance.

No bug to be fixed here, folks.
