No, unlike in Melee, executing an air dodge doesn't put you in special fall — but unlike in Brawl or Smash 4, you’re limited to doing so once per instance of being in midair (though being put into hitstun does give you your airdodge back if you’ve used it). However, a directional airdodge does have a lot of endlag, so if the airdodge doesn't get you to the ledge or back on the stage, the delay it imposes on further aerial actions (like, say, your double jump and actual recovery moves) may make it hurt more than help. I’m pretty sure that I've suffered a few self-destructs by accidentally executing a directional airdodge while offstage, not quite realizing I was offstage until I fell below ground level, and then dropping past the blast line while furiously pressing jump and Up+B without my character responding at all.
I actually ruined a deathless run of Galeem and Dharkon that way.
Also, you can't DAD in an upward direction unless you already have some upward momentum from a jump.
A non-directional airdodge has much less lag while being just as effective at making attacks go harmlessly through you, but has no innate effect on your momentum and requires you to take your finger off the control stick and let it reset to neutral before pressing the dodge button, and that brief moment of not actively pushing yourself towards the stage just might cause you to fall short of successfully recovering, especially if you're someone with poor aerial mobility in the first place, like, say, Little Mac.
If you’re trying to recover with Little Mac, make sure you really only use it when:
1. You’re dodging TOWARDS the stage. You’re not going to be able to recover if you dodge away from the stage, since his recovery is still not good and the lag is considerably high.
2. You’re either grabbing the ledge afterwards or you’re high enough above the ledge to deal with the lag and recover.
