We all know good games take time, and there's an insane amount of content in both the 3DS and Wii U versions. Remember than Brawl was announced for November 2007 at E3 '07 and was subsequently moved until March 2008 (January in Japan.) The sheer amount of content in the game might take the better part of a month to localize (like the 3DS version.)

Personally I'm fine with this if it happens, I want the best game possible, and I can be very patient for it.

"Holiday 2014" is very much pushing it as we've gone this far in the year without even a Japanese release date. It'll probably be out in North America by late November at the earliest, and early next year at the latest.

I really hope not, the difference between the Wii and Wii U is the Wii was selling very well and can afford a delay, Wii U however can't, it needs Smash as it's big holiday title, Hyrule Warriors, Bayo 1 + 2, and Captain Toad are great titles but they are noway as big system sellers as Smash is.

Sakurai seems hellbent on keeping a 2014 release date and I think with Bamco's participation that it will happen

I hope not, I kinda hope Nintendo learned their lesson from SSBB.
What lesson? Brawl is the best selling and most critically acclaimed smash yet, if anything, that would make them think the delays helped.

Lol you don't understand. If you were around in the Pre-Brawl Days. They said SSBB would come out in 2007 then it was pushed to December 2007, then January 2008 then finally March 2008. It was a painful time waiting...

After getting my hands on the game, I absolutely hope so. The product I played felt very unfinished. I know that it was an old build of the game, but I would not mind the game being delayed as much as needed in order to deliver a polished product.

I wouldn't mind a delay. Keeps me more focus on life while the game gets even more tuned up. I'm also prepared for the idea that it'll happen like SSBB series of delays, albeit it might not even happen.

Seems like you got your dates mixed up. It was first announced for December 3, 2007 for the first official date. So it was never even pushed, just mentioned it would be release sooner without Sonic's last minute addition. Then, it was moved to February 10, 2008. Wasn't even mentioned for January at all. And then finally March 9, 2008.

I was there, I know. Brawl still is the best game in regards of reviews and sales, if anything those numbers encourage nintendo to delay to keep working on the game.

Nah. It looks like development is closing up.

Of course, I would not put it past them to delay the game.

Heh, I've been thinking this and somewhat saying it for the past few months. I really don't want that to happen.

Considering Smash Bros. is a huge title that WILL sell Wii U's, and they're releasing it alongside Amiibo; I think Nintendo, Sora, and even Namco will do everything they can, up to and including demonic invocation, to get this game out during the holiday season.

If you think any of Melee's mechanics are the product of the game being "rushed" and/or otherwise neglected, you're highly ignorant. Melee was the product of meticulous and obsessive tuning over a fairly long development cycle.

To say otherwise is a blatant denial of development history which has been made available to us via Sakurai himself. Furthermore, it's entirely nonsensical (yeah, game physics and frame data occurred completely by accident guys).

Either way, you should probably stop posting such absurdities as it is border-line flame baiting.

WHOAA-HO! Easy now sailor. The game was in development for 13 months. I also recall hearing Miyamoto rushed it for Holiday season? I don't remember, and it's too late for me to be source checking. Point being, I was kidding around, no need for you to get so butt hurt. Goodness, it's thin ice whenever I even bother posting about anything negative about Melee! Newsflash - there are issues with it. But not worth starting a fight over. Sorry I offended you, I was merely being sarcastic.

I don't appreciate your disguised insults against me with just bigger words. This isn't my first rodeo, and bigger words don't make them any less hurtful.

It's highly unlikely. Sakurai's been saying 2014 ever since the beginning, and Nintendo's going to want the game out for Christmas.

I don't mean to sound negative about this, but the Wii U version is coming at what might as well be the tail-end of the year. One little hiccup in the development process between now and then, and the Wii U version will be pushed into next year.

I'd feel bad for those eagerly awaiting it, but I'd also be fine since I'll be glued to the 3DS version.

It's possible but I certainly hope not. The Wii U is in a bad way in terms of sales. I certainly don't want a rushed product out the door though. While I don't want them to delay it, I don't want a buggy game even more.

Please keep the topic on the release date of Smash 4, not whether you think Melee/Brawl was better/worse with their separate development schedules.

And what if they delayed the 3DS version because they didn't want it to release months before the Wii U version?

*insert Miyamoto quote about delayed games here*

Anyway, I hope it doesn't get delayed, but after they announced the October 3rd release date for Smash 3DS, I'm kinda prepped for the worst.

While I hope it doesn't get delayed, since it still doesn't have a concrete date, I think it getting delayed becomes a bit more likely. Of course, it's also possible it will be early December for Japan and early January for other countries, and then they'll technically have made the original date. The one thing that might help keep it on track, however, is Amiibos since they currently only interface with Smash, and the holiday season seems like the prime time to release them.

Nah the game will be cancelled. Too much money spent on creating those amazing character introductions and too much time wasted playing the game instead of finishing it.

Well it was mainly delayed because of SSE. There is no SSE this time if it is delayed they better have a good reason.
How do you know it was because of SSE? I don't remember Sakurai or anyone ever claiming that was the reason.

I'm hoping its not, and they seem to be out for a good Holiday 2014 release date, so it has to be somewhere in December. As long as the west gets it first since lucky Japan is getting the 3DS a month before us hahaha

I suppose I have not given it much thought; however, by a preponderance of the evidence, it is logical to presume that it will be delayed. The 3DS version was delayed despite being the one to release first (which means they are dedicating more resources to it). Prior, there was going to be about a four month discrepancy, now we are to assume that there is going to be a 2 month discrepancy instead. We do not even know if it will undergo a worldwide release, unlike the 3DS version.

There are two ways we can look at this. One is that we can't play the game soon because we don't want to wait. The other is by looking at it an objective perspective on how the Wii U is performing based on one delay. If I had to ask:

• Should Nintendo have both Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U so that Wii U can fare amazingly this holiday? This option is good for the gamer and the company. We are able to finally play the game despite it being slightly unpolished. At the same time, the Wii U would have two system sellers later in the year. Next year they can rely on Splatoon, Mario Maker, Yoshi's Woolly World, Xenoblade X, Star Fox, and Zelda to give the system more sales momentum.

Or,

• Should Nintendo rely on just Mario Kart 8 this holiday season so that Super Smash Bros. for Wii U can give the console legs next year? Obviously the bad part is that we can't play it soon, but it'd be good for us in the long run. For Nintendo, however, it's a double-edged sword. SSB4 would have to miss one holiday, but because of the potential delays for other games, they can release it early next year to give the console more sales momentum.

I personally don't want it to be delayed, but if it means polishing up the game, then I guess that's okay. c:

No. I'm fairly certain it's going to be done earlier than we expect, but it's intentionally going to be held back so the Wii U has a strong and banging christmas release.

Think about it if they release the 3DS version, and delay the Wii U version then it would buy some time for people to play, and train for the Wii U version.

Or the people interested in the Wii U version won't be able to wait anymore and just buy the 3DS version which could lead to less Wii U sales.

it was a bad joke though. To my knowledge melee doesn't have any obvious "Oversights on mechanics", unlike brawl with hitstun cancel which wasn't rushed, so its almost ironic just how bad that joke actually was.

I both think and don't think it will. On one hand, I think it will, because "Holiday 2014" could very easily slip into 2015, especially since both Brawl and the 3DS version was delayed.

On the other hand, Sakurai seem to want to stay within 2014 as he promised. I think we maybe got the final releases at E3 - an October release for the 3DS and a December release for the Wii U. I think Sakurai wants to make sure it does come out in 2014, especially before Christmas to make it sell even better.

So, all in all, I don't think it will be pushed to 2015, but I don't think it is impossible.
