Posted this on /r/smashbros but I figured I'd ask here too.

I know it's recommended and all, but the service seems to be looking up from the previous Smash game. The only time I've ever had a problem with the switch's online multiplayer is with Super Mario Party (other player's bad internet and no option to quit the game) and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (the VERY occasional rubberbanding on worldwide). My router is also at least a 2016 model asus and is 9 feet away from my switch while docked.

Also, if I DO need to get one, which one should I get? There's the official one as well as the popular Hori one.

Please help!

No, not really, but a wired connection will always be better and more stable than wireless.

Any simple USB to LAN adapter should suffice.

Not true. I bought a basic one (forget the brand) and my Wii U didn't recognize it. It needs to be one that the Switch software recognizes, because unlike a PC, you can't just install a driver and make it work.

OP, I'd simply play the game without a LAN adapter, and if you find more latency than you like, then go get yourself a LAN adapter. It will definitely be a more stable and faster connection than even the best AC router, but whether or not you'll be dissatisfied with your wireless connection as-is should be the determining factor.
