Do Gamecube games have some way to differnate between a wired controller and a Wavebird?

I noticed in the Gamecube Mario Parties that if you turn the rumble feature on and select a minigame that uses rumble (while using a Wavebird) the game will automacially turn rumble off for that minigame.

Can people look into this and see why this is happening? It's a good thing, since it means I can keep rumble on and not have to turn it off if someone uses my Wavebird. I'm just puzzled as to how games can see when a Wavebird is being used
