  • Small section of the map becomes highlighted
  • Players must stay within that highlighted area to gain points
  • Can either play teams or free for all
  • After about 10 seconds of the area becoming active, it disappears
  • It then reappears elsewhere on the stage
  • Highlighted section can appear in tricky places on a stage like on the guns in Lylat Cruise, King of Red Lions on Pirate Ship, and many others I can't think of
  • The area changes in height and width depending on where it appears
Need your help to think of a reasonable way of rewarding points for this game type. I have a few ideas:
  • each player who is in the highlighted area gets 1 point for every second they stay in there
  • players inside the area charge up a meter below their damage graphic, first to charge up the meter wins

Capture the Flag
  • can be played in teams or free for all
  • a neutral flag appears somewhere on the battlefield
  • once a player grabs it it becomes their flag
  • for every one second they hold onto the flag they are awarded a point
  • they must run around the battlefield and avoid dropping the flag
  • other players can beat the flag from them with powerful and numerous attacks
  • the flag acts like a green shell or bomb where any A move throws it
  • players can only dodge and use B attacks to defend themselves
  • if the flag is dropped, it becomes neutral until someone else picks it up
  • if the flag falls offscreen, it respawns on it's own pedestal where it stays for 5 seconds until the pedestal disappears and it falls onto the stage

Break the Targets
  • a single target appears somewhere on the battlefield
  • first player to break it gets a point
  • target can appear in difficult places like high up in the air or off the stage
  • can be played in teams or free for all

Board the Platforms
  • a single platform appears somewhere on the battlefield
  • first player to land on it gets a point
  • like break the targets, it can be placed in difficult spots
  • can be played in teams or free for all

this one is a little farfetched but it would be incredible...

Survival
  • can play solo or with people
  • play on specific maps dedicated to this game type (very large maps)
  • you have a castle with a special trophy that you must defend
  • castle is on the far right of the screen
  • these stages include one for each of the "main reps" in Smash (Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Star Fox, Pokemon, Kid Icarus and Fire Emblem) and one original Smash stage.
  • hordes of Fighting Wire Frames spawn from the left and attack you
  • there are different rounds of attackers
  • as the rounds progress they get more difficult
  • your castle has different defences that the fighters must overcome such as moats, doors and barricades
  • players must survive each round by fighting off the wire frames so they don't damage the defences and eventually take the trophy
  • castle/building has an open roof so players can jump down into the area in front of the castle to fight and then back up inside
  • once a wire frame reaches the trophy, they must run it back to the left side of the screen
  • once the trophy falls it returns back to it's original place in the castle
  • at the end of each round you get a bonus item or items
  • they can be anything and you can use whatever you get to your advantage for the next round
  • motion sensor bombs don't b itch out and disappear like they did in Brawl
  • you can get new defences to use such as extra barricades and other game mode specific items like a bullet bill turret
  • players are killed by being knocked off the screen from attacks
  • each person has 1 life
  • once someone dies, they are out of the game
  • sometimes a life appears in the bonus item box to revive a teammate
  • game modes can be chosen like multi-man melee where you have a set limit you need to survive for, or an endless round to see how far you can get

Tower Defence
  • 2 teams
  • played in a unique stage
  • each side has a wooden tower of some sort
  • invisible wall on each side to keep characters at their towers, but allows items/projectiles through
  • the purpose is to throw items that spawn on your side at the opposing tower to try and destroy it
  • items spawn on both sides randomly
  • game is played with stamina
  • players can either sacrifice their % to hit bombs, or use other items to protect it
  • you only have one life
  • game ends when either all players on one team die, or their tower falls

Looking forward to hearing what you guys can come up with!
Especially with the gamepad's capabilities.

I do actually have an idea, but it blatantly copies another game. If you have ever played MK9, there is a slot-machine mode where random attributes occur in the fight. You have some typical ones like poison and invisibility, but you also have intricate ones like inverted controls and upside down fighting. Essentially it is a random mode that would apply things like Metal Box or Bunny Hood to random players if they win the slot machine or something to that extent.

Essentially everyone would spawn with different items/attributes and battle.

Heavy Hitter

  • One out of the two or four characters (depending the amount of players playing) have the durability to take many hits lasting up to 300%.
  • 300% is about the equivalent of 20% in this instance for the durable opponent.
  • The durable opponent has incredible strength, making other players feel as if they're lightweight, and making it difficult to fight close.
  • Once the durable opponent dies, the effect passes over to another player.
  • The players going against the one opponent aren't able to hurt one another.

Special Treatment

  • This requires the Wii U Gamepad.
  • The player with the Gamepad has the option to give players an item. However, to make this fair, a single player cannot be selected twice until each player has been given a "special treatment".
  • The items can go from a Tiny Mushroom to a Smash Ball.
  • To make things more interesting, however, the items given out are completely random, making this fight chaotic.

Survivor:
Stock match.
A "king" continually fights one on one with players that join.
The first "king" picks the rules beforehand.
The "king" has to continually play as the character they picked first.
Whenever the "king" wins a match, they're only get one new life, and then fight the next opponent.
But when the "king" loses, the new champion takes over as "king", their stocks are fully restored and the cycle continues.

3-on-3 Mode
  • Similar to tag teams in other fighting games, but without the ability to switch characters at will.
  • Each player selects 2 to 3 characters for their "roster". A roster cannot have multiples of the same character.
  • Whenever a player is KO'd, they switch to the next character in their roster, going in order from first picked to last picked.
  • When a character is defeated, they are not gone forever. In a time match (or in a stock match, provided there are more stocks than characters per player), the cycle will continue until the timer is up or all stocks are cleared. For example, if each player has 4 stocks, the first character in a 3-man roster will fight on the 1st and 4th stocks.
  • Can be coupled with special matches and teams. Up to 4 players can play with these settings at once.
1-on-1 Team Mode
  • Similar to 3-on-3, except players face off in teams where they alternate within the same match.
  • Similar to a crew match, players share stocks (or points, in the case of a time match), alternating whenever one's partner is KO'd.
  • Players to a team can choose the same character.
  • It's possible to do 2-on-1-on-1 or 3-on-1 using this mode, but not 2-on-2-on-2, obviously.
  • That's pretty much it. It's doubles, but only one person fights for their team at a time. It's like a condensed crew match.

Juggernaut (ish)
  • At least 3 players recommended
  • One player starts as the Juggernaut, who starts with 0%.
  • The other three players, who are all temporarily on a team, start with 250% (could be changed)
  • Everyone starts with an infinite amount of lives
  • The time limit is five minutes
  • The juggernaut gets 1 point for every opponent he KO's
  • If one of the other three players KO the juggernaut, they get a point and become the juggernaut (his/her percentage goes down to 0%)
  • The teams change once the juggernaut is defeated, so now the new juggernaut is on his own
  • The player with the most points when the match finishes wins
VIP
  • Four players required
  • Two players on each team
  • One player on each team starts as the VIP, who has one life (can be changed)
  • The other players are the guards, who have infinite lives and must defend their team's VIP, but can also try to KO the other team's VIP
  • The team that eliminates the opposing team's VIP wins the game

How about having stock be the default setting first.

Revenge mode
  • 3-4 players
  • plays out like a normal stock match and whenever someone loses all of their lives they come back as a ghost and have a chance to gain a life back.
  • If they manage to KO another player they get one life back.
  • But the ghost player's attacks are a lot weaker than they normally are.

This actually reminds me a lot of Brawl's Norfair stage. In that case, players HAD to get to a specific spot, or else they'd practically get KO'd. It'd be interesting to see that without the capability of KO'ing people as a player, tho.

Some say Multi-Man Melee/Brawl is the equivalent of a survival mode. But why can't we have that and this:

Survival of the Fittest

  • Can be played with one or two players.
  • Can be played online or offline.
  • Objective: Endure as many matchups as you can without being KO'ed.
  • Every player has 1 stock. Once you lose it, automatic game over.
  • Items and item spawn frequency are On and High by default.
  • Eliminate all enemies in each stage to progress.
  • A counter for how many matches a player(s) win is shown. You aim to get the highest.
  • Each match is arranged like that of Brawl Classic Mode, except the matches are drawn at random. Ex.: Your first match is when you fight Marth on Arena Ferox and the next is Samus on Pyrosphere, rinse and repeat.
  • You may occasionally have the choice of rounds where you face up to 2-3 characters from their corresponding series.
  • Battlefield/Final Destination do appear, although the opponent(s) you face there is randomly selected.
  • The more rounds you win, the opponent level scales.
  • After each match, you have a 5 second timer where you have the choice of 3 stages of which match you want to fight next. It displays the character(s), stage, and CPU level. If no stage is selected by 5 seconds, a random one will be chosen.
  • To compensate players who may be having a bit of trouble, the CPU level for match selections might go down depending on how far you are. You may even be able to follow a 'level path' through the match select for easier matchups until you pick up.
  • An invisible counter is set for a random number in a fixed range that gives the player a bonus chance by winning a round.
  • Bonuses include, but are not limited to: start with Curry, Reflect, Invisible, Metal, Invisible, Turbo, or Bunny effect, free Final Smash at spawn, extra stock (rare), damage wager (1/4th of total damage received for previous match is what opponent(s) spawn with)

Also, while not related to new modes, does anyone wish that the bonus stages in Classic were mixed up a bit like in Melee? I'd love a little Multi-Man or Home Run Contest aside Target Test.

Mastered Hand (Catch Mii If U Can)

  • This Requires the Wii U Gamepad.
  • 1 to 4 players can join.
  • Solo or Team Battle is acceptable.
  • Time and stock are key factors. Both time limit and stock can be adjusted to the players liking.
  • The objective is for the player using the Wii U Gamepad to slap and grab any of the players and KO them within a certain amount of time.
  • Slapping not only raises player damage, but stuns them as well. Grabbing locks them, though it is possible to break free.
  • Also, the player using the Gamepad can be attacked once their finger is placed on the touchscreen.
  • This does not exclude other players from defeating one another or using their opponent(s) as bait for the one controlling the Gamepad.
  • In a solo match or a team battle, the last player KO'd wins. In teams, however, two players are capable of winning since they're on teams.
  • If the player with the Gamepad fails to take out each opponent within the amount of time, the players win.

I hope this game has some crazy new game modes for us.

I think I speak for basically all of us when I say: "**** coin battles."

I can see Coin Battles staying. I never really considered them a 'game mode'. I get a lot of merit out of the Solo aspect of Smash, so something akin to Survival of the Fittest better be in there!

Wow. These are some pretty cool ideas. I wouldn't mind seeing these in Smash myself. Someone get Sakurai.

Anyway I have a couple ideas.

Tag Battle(1-4 Players)

Each player can pick up two characters instead of one. The fight starts normally as any free for all would. But if you first character gets knocked out, you are switched to the second character you picked. Each time you get knocked out you'll go back and forth with these characters.

Sword fight(1-4 Players)

This one is pretty basic. All players always have a beam sword in their possession. Much like Metal Battles have characters constantly in metal form.

Bomb Battle(1-4 Players)

The only items available are Bombs. The only way to be damaged is by getting hit by said bombs. Each player has their color coded bombs, like Red being Player 1 and Blue being Player 2. You can pick up stable bombs with the Grab button, they'll be yours now. then throw you bombs with the B button. Stable bombs are black. And you can hold up to ten at a time. You earn points by K.Oing other players, and lose points by getting K.Oed yourself. This is on a timer.

Had a similar idea involving Pokeballs or assist trophies

Character Switch (1-4 Players)
  • The battle starts off like a regular battle.
  • Every minute, the character everyone is playing as is switched for another character at random. The process continues until the battle is finished.
  • Lives and damage would be carried over to the next character.

Defeat the Enemies
*Kinda like the Multi Man modes
*1-4 players
*Instead of the usual MM modes, you fight a mix of enemies from all series in Smash
*There are waves, each getting progressively harder
*Every 10 rounds, there's a boss thrown in from a random selection (also from the series repped in smash)
*You can pick any stage

4 player boss battles, multiman brawl, homerun statium,

for 3ds, 4 player smash the targets where you cooperativly destroy the targets, due to separate screens, all characters dont have to be in the same place at the same time and can split the target smashing among each other.

How easily modes from Halo, CoD and Mortal Kombat could become Smash Bros. modes. :D

Well how 'bout Oddball?

Oddball
Have an item, a holdable football or something, spawn on the stage. Who ever holds the item accumulates points. Obviously, like with any held item, for instance a shell or pokeball, your A attack selection is limited while holding the ball, but it can be thrown. A death results in losing half your points. The player/team with the most points when the time runs out wins!

Edit: Thought up another one! This one's inspired by Bowyer from Super Mario RPG.

Disabled Move Mode

Kind of a twist on Single Button mode.
An icon at the top of the screen randomly cycles through disabling all the players' moves, either all standard attacks, special attacks or grabs/shields/doges, forcing all the players to adopt a continually changing strategy!
