Differences in GCN controllers

I have always wondered what the differences in performance are between the different GCN controllers. I have taken apart and put back together many of my controllers and have only noticed differences in the L and R buttons.

Is there any color of controller that is preferred for melee play above the other controllers? And does anyone know a fix to wobbly analog sticks, it seems like I have a few amazing controllers, but I don't use them because they have a wobbly analog that kills my laser game with Falco, because I always turn around while SHLing.

Anything regarding controller types and fixes to analog sticks would be amazing.

Some of the oldest GC controllers have these metallic support things in L/R triggers

White controllers have badly shaped R/L buttons that get jammed, not going all the way, when you press them at the back edge, which some people like me do

I actually have a picture comparing the R button from the white controller and the early purple controller. I can dig it up if you want

You can replace the control sticks by switching the stick with the c-stick, you need to solder them though

Apparently you can replace the analog stick with a wii nunchuk stick. My friend is working on it but we haven't put it together yet.

YOu can, and it works well, but I prefer the original cap because the longer stem of the nunchuk stick means it has to travel a longer distance for the same input
Makes playing fox a pain

First generation purple and black controllers have the x and y potentiometers flipped on the sticks (the x is on top of the y in first generation, and the opposite is true in subsequent ones). The feel of the stick is not substantially altered, but it does mean that the sticks wear out substantially faster.

The 2nd generation controllers are all slightly larger on the hand grip region and that is retained on (most) future models.

Additionally, first generation and 2nd generation controllers have different springs for the L/R buttons. The first generation are more rigid and use less wire, the second generation are looser and use more wire. They both impart exactly the same resistance, so it's unnoticeable.

I use a wiimote nunchuck stick on my personal controller (black/clear with black stick), I prefer it because it increases my leverage, making tilts easier.

In some controllers, you can pull out both stick boxes and easily swap them. I've only seen 1 out of 6 or 7 controllers that is like that though. The rest are welded on.

takes a while to break in the new white ones imo. in my experience silver ones seemed to have the best/most sensitive control sticks (easier to pivot/dash) than the others.

does the metal clip in the triggers add anything extra towards support and what not ? I may be tweaking around a lot with the controllers here pretty soon. Im pretty much trying to make an amazing controller by combining the best parts from all my existing controllers.

I've also wondered about this, and it seems to be a little hard to find any info via google
in this thread, you can see the release dates of the controllers

http://s9.zetaboards.com/Nintendo_64_Forever/topic/7197954/1/
my experience is that my purple controller joystick got pretty worn out fast, my purple/clear has seen much more use and still is better. controllers with the same release date would be likely to have the same board
i wonder if the platinum would be the ultimate one, if there was a revision change there i don't know.

and we know armada used purple/clear at apex13 ;)

do you know how white's are different? or are they counted as gen2?
I haven't actually had the opportunity to dissect any white controllers, so I can't tell you from firsthand experience.

I know the white ones have a slightly longer cord, but other than that I can't really say anything about them.

One thing that works very well is the PS3 analog stick. It is an amazing Gamecube stick replacement and fits right into the analog stick hole. The C-stick hole is a different story tho and requires some sanding....

The white ones that I've seen have the guard rail things around the stick swapped. Iirc, the vertical bars are below the horizontal bars, but most of the other controllers have the horizontal bars below the vertical ones. I think having the vertical bars on top makes your left to right more precise while the horizontal bars make up to down more precise. That might just be my imagination though, but I thought that before I even opened them so idk.

Yeah my friend Niko ordered a white controller and he's been complaining about the triggers, good to know its a consistent issue.

I am WAY better at short hopping with characters like Fox using the control stick with the silver controller than I am with black (although I only really do that for SHDL)

White controllers suck, I don't know why some people like them more than the older ones (Gimpyfish hates the white controller too) but then again I'm so above everyone in my awesome tastes that few people agree that the light press Wifi AD for P:M is fantastic.

I love my purple controller, and comparing it to the white:
-The white's plastic rubs off super quick, and you have to replace the stick (I used a C-stick from a rummaged controller, I might switch it with a nunchuck stick but so far my friend enjoys using it)
-The X and Y are pushed out higher (they are say like 1mm more away from the plastic casing than the purple), making Short hopping harder
-The B and Y are farther apart, making my method of multi-shining harder where you pivot your thumb over the two with your wrist to twitch your hand.
+The only positive aspect is that supposedly the control stick wears out less fast than the others since it's built different/stronger (but could also maybe mean it's less sensitive, who knows) [and of/c the longer cord]

Its interesting seeing how controllers change with age too and usage. Newer controllers felt awkward while a slightly aged, melee-worn controller that is not at the end of its life span feels really good.

They have the same setup as the original controllers then.

There's not really a difference in resistance or control quality I've noticed, but since the horizontal axis is used more than the vertical, they tend to wear out (horizontal deadzone and looseness) a bit more quickly.

Idk whats with the white controller hate, but mine is amazing. I put the Shoulder buttons from the indigo controller in it, and put buttons from my black controller in it, and it has no wobble on the analog. :)
