Dash-Cancel vs. Wave Dash Down

Is there really a point in dash canceling as opposed to waved ash down?

I can't really think of a situation where dash canceling is more useful.

You mean run cancelling; dash and run are different (and you can't cancel dash by initiating a crouch).

Wavedash down takes jumpsquat + 10 frames before you can act (13 in Fox's case), whereas run cancelling takes only 2 frames (1 frame of RunBrake and 1 frame of crouch). Run cancelling also preserves your velocity, whereas wavedashing down only does so for the duration of the jumpsquat before cancelling it.

In the case of special moves, you can act instantly out of your run without having to go through the RunBrake and crouch. Depending on one's preferences for terminology, these might not technically be considered run cancels despite them allowing action out of run (since they function differently).

Watch how other Foxes use running shine; that's the most significant use of it. There are also things like run cancel to down tilt or run cancel to down smash, which are more situational.

You can wavedash down during a dash or run but run cancel can only be used in run animation which gives it significantly less positions where you can use it. However wavedash down is a lot laggier. I use wd down more for mind game type stuff and run cancel for running shine or downtilt.

^ This. Basically, you use wavedash down if you are not yet out of your foxtrot animation (aka the initial burst of run before you actually transition into a full run animation).

An additional use for Luigi mostly (but also can help ICs) is to wavedash into wavedash in place. That way, your momentum is stopped and you can do f-tilt without being easy to shield grab.

If you're in dash wanting to attack, pivot is also less laggy than wavedash down. If you want to keep moving, you can dash dance, keep running, or fox trot. If you want to stop and grab, do an aerial, usmash or anything one can cancel jumpsquat or shielding with, you can shield stop, which is easier than pivoting. If you don't know what you want to do out initial dash yet, you should WD down or DD.
