Yeah, I agree that top players should start at a higher ELO, but where? I'm not comfortable making those kinds of subjective decisions. For that matter, if we put OOC like Mojo at a higher starting elo, why not start Bluezaft, so that people who lost to him at the first tourney this year aren't punished heavily.

Do it for Blue too, haha. He was top of DFW before most of you played. Few would argue against a high starting ELO for the likes of Mojo, Wobbles, and Bluezaft. In a way it'll make it a hybrid subjective/objective ranking that we talked about earlier except that the subjective part happens early and once for a select few before the objective data comes in

This is the reason I never got around to doing the ELO. I wanted it to be accurate, but where do I begin with ELO ratings? Where do I end? I didn't know so I just didn't **** with it lol

Also I'll just say I don't think the list is TOO bad or anything. If you replaced LK with me or Thoraxe then that's a fairly accurate rep of 10, even if it's not in order.

Ok, how about this. I'll spend some time tonight giving top players starting ELO's that I think are fairly accurate, and send the resulting list around on FB to people whose input I think would be helpful, and we'll see work from there.

Panels for the most part are extremely bias there is no real way to get a solid ranking system i think. Unless we take Certain events and use them as a like a circuit.

Yeah the thing is tournaments aren't a great indicator of relative skill beyond like second place, so it all gets kind of jumbled especially as you go farther down the list.

Tbh we've already made up a tier list for all the notable DFW players but then if we release them as "official" or whatever people get butthurt

Actually @ TheRealAlbert , super curious here. When did you start playing melee? Your kind of a beast for so few tournaments under your belt.

Also We do have a panel based PR. It's the Texas PR. It will be updating again at the end of the summer season(After low tier city unless there is a DIME right after that).

Wobbles entering events like DIME was a "One time thing" because he "needed the money to go to Mexico."
Seeing as he doesn't enter anymore and he is primarily known as a AZ player, you might want to recolour his name to indicate that or put him on a different spot on the board.

Wobbles enters the ELO, hilariously still in second after his two first places. You can't see it but our top 10 became ever more dominated by OOC players; Most of Wobbles ELO comes from beating them at KOTH3 and Bluezaft at the first FX Biweekly. Now that Wobbles is actually a part of the rankings I don't want to mess with his starting ELO; I feel that should be kept for one-time bracket busters ala Silent Wolf.

That's not fair to all of the people who lost to wobbles though. ELO will just be like "wow you just lost to this guy who has never entered a tournament before" and then your elo goes down further than it should

@ W WaterlessFishie , I know. But the exact same can be said of the first tournament you, bluezaft, dr drew, or any other strong player attended. Do I manually set starting ELO's for every notable player? Where do I draw the line for notable? Do all notable players start the same, or does Wobbles start at 1800 and the rest at 1700, or what? Doing so makes up and coming players have a much larger gap in the ELO to climb before they reach a top spot, as well.

One idea I've been toying with is starting a new ELO in January, using this years ELO as everyone's starting ELO for the next cycle. Obviously not a fix for now, but it might improve things for the scene moving forward.

Again, totally open to suggestions as to how to 'fix' the ELO. I just want some measure - even a heavily flawed one - of 'objectivity' to exist here, given we already have a pretty solid subjective panel PR.

Wobbles should start at at least 2000. That guy is so far beyond DFW it's unreal.
Does anyone know if Wobbles still intends to enter events after he's made all of the cash he wants?

I don't see why Wobbles should be a problem. Sure, it's pretty bad for players who lost to him at KotH but if he does intend to enter more tournaments the same thing will not happen again so I say we should keep him in there. Also, everyone knows how wobbles is beyond the metagame of DFW so we don't need to fix the ELO to tell people about that. I say we should keep it as is unless wobbles explicitly requests his score to be excluded from the list.

Honestly ELO isn't that bad of a ranking system.
It might favor those who go to more tourneys, but it also allows for a clear view of player ranking to be made without personal opinion coming into play
