Customizable Movesets: more limited than we think?

So I was watching the Direct again the other day (boredom set in), and one thing I noticed during the section about customizable movesets is that the animations for the moves DO NOT change. Examples:

- Mario's fireballs change, but the animation stays the same.
- Same with Marth's elongated shield breaker, DK's super armored headbutt, and Pit's arrow.
- Even Kirby's freeze blow is out of the same exact animation as his inhale technique.

I'm no technical expert in game design, but don't you think this may limit the scope of customization? IE: Toon Link's leaf would be a completely different animation than any of his current special moves, so it wouldn't fit. However, a bombchu would work as a customization because it would be similar animation to pulling out a bomb. Or fire/ice arrows instead of normal arrows.

I think changing Kirby's inhale into ice breath is pretty significant.

I don't think anybody was expecting to substitute moves for something entirely different. At least, not after the Direct demonstration.
There might be a more scope to it than you think; it might be possible to change Link's UpB to behave more like DK's, for instance. Maybe to change Fox's blaster to be like Samus'. Those are pretty significant adjustments.

The way I think it'll work is that each character will have a few options for each of their special moves. They'll do some minor things for the better, but at the same time add a risk factor. Because of how time-consuming it could be to create so many possibilities, I'm expecting probably 2 options per move. Also, I'd think that it could be possible that you get get stickers to unlock custom moves, but I dunno.

I might have gone with you on this, but Mario's Fire Jump Punch seems to have a different animation. You kind of left that one out, see.

Last time I watched it in slo-mo, it looked like Mario does a turn and punches with the other hand, for the second hit.

You're probably right, I don't see anything happening drastically different from their special moves like the Deku Leaf. It would be neat, though. For Toon Link, hoping for the Fire & Ice arrows.

I think we'll get to choose one of three final smashes for each character.
That way every character will have at least one screen nuke final smash.

My speculation is that "custom movesets" will simply alter the strength, attack speed, projectile speed, and size of already existing moves.

However, Sakurai did state that he would reveal more about this in the future, so I'm not entirely sure just yet.

I think people are thinking that there will be sliders or percentages that alter the power of moves. I'm pretty sure there are just like 2 other presets to the normal one and that's it. Nothing as crazy as people are making it out to be.

The choice of words in the Direct, "add nuance," makes the customization choices sound few or limited. And so far, only special move customizations have been shown. I guess we won't know how useful Pit's loop-de-loop arrow is, or how potent Kirby's ice breath is, until the game is out, though.

I agree, but I think that we will get a VERY limited idea of this. Like 2 other presets. Like I think that the fast and slow fire balls of Mario are the only 2 ways you can change them. However every special move will have this, so I guess it is pretty crazy.

The moves might be limited to the same animation; but the utility is so different. Like Mario, his giant fireball is going to be a better zoning option. His dragon fist also looked entirely useful. I mean, they just change minor elements. I wasn't expecting Toon Link's leaf (although that would be awesome).

I wonder if it will be a Wii - U exclusive feature. We haven't seen it anywhere else so far.
I'd be fine with this. The WiiU version is going to be the version that's played at most competitive venues. If nothing else, largely due to the limitations on video capturing a 3DS screen. Besides the spectator aspect, you also have to consider that matches between players on the 3DS will not easily be monitored by TOs, either. If a dispute arises with little to no spectators on a match... better hope there's a replay feature, get me? The WiiU also has the advantage of a normal controller, among other things.

The HD graphics are going to lend themselves better to things like custom moves, as well, since some differences might have only minor visual cues; tough to see on that 3DS screen, maybe.

I don't mind these not being on the 3DS in all honesty if that were the case, and lament the annoyance they will create for competitive play when each player is customizing their character and trying to figure out the best combinations and all. It sounds like fun at first but it will end up being complex, do we need a CP system for changing customization mid match? Eek.

I highly doubt that customizable movesets will be customizable down to the percentage the move does and be able to have tons of new animations. I'm thinking it will change nothing more than the properties of moves to your choosing, this would balance out of course. Link for example, could maybe take off the wind effect on the boomerang and have it become a regular boomerang once more.

Yeah the customization's aren't going to be completely different moves it'll be the same moves just with somewhat different attributes. Mario's fireball is bigger, slower, but does more damage. Kirby's Ice breath does 1-2% damage for each hit. Etc..

I doubt that "custom movesets" will be permitted in competitive play.

Yes, but I'm referring to competitive play, where professional gamers compete for money and prizes.

I'm in support of custom movesets, regardless of whether or not they actually change the moves of characters or simply alter/buff/nerf them.
