My guess is equippable items will be...

Sadly I don't see how this could work in tournaments. Assuming every station had equipment with every stat variation and effect in the game, how would people prepare for vastly different characters than what they are used to practicing on? Many combos would be rendered useless due to the opponent's defense stat and other effects, and it seems too much to ask players to remember their opponent's 3 customized specials, their attack, defense and speed stats, and whatever other effects their equipment gives them every match.

That being said, it could be a fun side tournament idea for the 3DS version.

But is that random or preset?
We don't actually know, but I'm told Uprising had a similar system where it was randomized. Since Sakurai was the director of Uprising, odds are it'll follow the same pattern.

But even if it wasn't, the point stands that there are multiple variations of the same equipment piece, and if they are to be allowed in a tournament setting then it's absolutely vital that everyone has the same variations available to use. Otherwise you could be playing at a disadvantage based purely on which machine you happen to be using, or in 3DS matches, which player had more time to grind for the better equipment. That sort of thing may work in Pokemon where pre-match preparation is almost literally half the battle, but I do not like the idea of being at a disadvantage, especially in a ditto, just because I had better things to do than farm. Or to put it another way, Smash should test who is more skilled with their character, not who has the better stat boosters.

The above points are of course moot if there turns out to be a reliable method of getting any given piece of equipment, but I'm honestly not that hopeful.

Then I suppose it depends on whether players can share the same equipment or if when they select a piece it becomes exclusive to them.

At best I could see someone using a 3DS to synch the same equipment to all Wii U stations(since we know equipment/customizations can be transferred), and then using a set of pre-defined equipment based on the character, such as speeding up ganondorf. Mostly to balance characters of course.

Just letting everyone pick what equipment they want isn't all that great because of time and balance reasons, but using them to make more characters viable seems like a good thing.

The most easiest way is to not care about the actual equipment and more about the numbers. Only allow equipment changes in decimal steps and have only fitting equipment available (you can feed equipment to Amiibos). So players can set up there attributes quickly and reach the numbers they want.

Still equipment could be messing up match ups and the meta-game too much. But it would be a interesting possibility to use them to balance characters outside of patches. If some character is to strong, fast or heavy, he could be rebalanced with forcing equipment on him.

I think anything below B tier should be allowed to use customization, since it puts them on an even playing field

Let's get customizable movesets in and situated before even THINKING about equipment. :bomb:
Agreed. It's a battle already for customizable movesets.

I'd also say it's too early to tell if equipment will be legal or not.

Hopefully they'll have trading of these through Streetpass. In Kid Icarus: Uprising, you could trade your favourite weapon with others. Then the receiver just had to pay hearts (the gold of that game) and they got their own copy.
