I never saw that one coming. From a programmer's standpoint, it is not that hard to implement, so I am glad they are giving us the option.

This time, names are extremely important. That’s because we’ve included personalized button configurations.
This goes in line with the four possible control schemes. So, now, we will see more than just four different "controllers"; we will see players using random button setups. Given the current state of Melee, what would you change? What techniques could be made easier by rearranging the controls?

I personally use only the Y button to jump, so I would probably change X into my new grab button.

I'm guessing this topic will get sanctioned by Mic128, so I'll go ahead and post.

I'm hoping we get a new special move mapped to the whichever button we aren't using to jump. Example: Bowser gets a chain chomp, and whatever direction you're pressing on the control stick at the time is the direction it launches.

And if this function is worth anything, we will be able to turn off up to jump.

YES,,, Do you know how often I die because I am floating with peach, and I do u-air, and die because Im too far out. Well, it really was not a u-air, it was a jump canceled u-air...

But me, I'm just gonna set it to be like melee, and then when I see what is really useful in brawl, like in 64 it was grabs, and in melee it was the shine, i'll set that to be like, A and i'll use the c-stick :)

I wonder if there are chosen setups, or it is all custom...

I think it's a pretty sweet idea, giving people the ability to really choose how they want to control their character, but I'm wondering, can't some things become really broken because of this? Think of some things in melee that require insane finger coordination and speed-(hmm...) now think about how easy those things would be if you could map the controls to whatever button you want.

I dunno... I see a lot of pain from space animals in my future.

Same hear, only I'll make Y my grab since I usually jump with X.

It sounds like a really good idea, I just hope it doesn't ruin the balance of the game...

This is great news for me indeed. I do all my L-canceling and WDing with R instead of L, so I always have to move my trigger finger to Z to grab. Hopefully I can just make L my grab and solve all my problems. Also getting rid of jump on the control stick would be wonderful. To all those saying they are going to make X/Y grab, wont this make JCing your grabs more difficult? I would think you would need two fingers to do it quick enough. Just my two cents.

Hmm, I don't know if it would make Wavedashing easier... something tells that doing something complicated, like say, moving your shield to a face button won't be allowed... mostly because of the pressure sensitivity of the shield. And if it were on a face button, what if you always air-dodged when you tried to L-Cancel? would you be able to set shield and air-dodge to two different buttons?

But then again, you look at the Wiimote and chuck, and right off the bat there doesn't seem to be a way that you would control the density of your shield, so God only knows what they will do...

Agreed. Disabling control stick jumping would be heavenly.

Justin Wiles, I've often pondered on that issue. The only analog aspect left would be tilting the controller. Perhaps there WILL be shield button that changes based on the tilt of the Wii remote or nunchuk. O_O

We don't know that we can disable stick jumping yet. It is just our hope.
well, if the controller is customizable, its should give you the option if you want to jump with the control stick.

Example if its a move menu type of configuration like this (GCN controller):

Special:B
Normal:A
Grab:Z
Jump:X,Y
Move:Control Stick
Shield:L,R
Taunt: D-pad+up
Dodge: (shield)+down
Air dodge: (shield) in air
Smash: C-Stick, Control Stick+A

then in the jump area you just don't add control+up

I'm pretty sure the Z button on the Wiimote is pressure sensitve. I'm at work right now so I can't check but I will once I get home.

Edit: the Z button is on the nunchuck, actually.

If I set shielding to y, jumping to x, and make R my grab, wavedashing and wavegrabbing will be AWESOME!!!
We should send some giant thank-you letter to the programming crew of SSBB

As long as I can disable jumping with the stick and shorthop with X (please, Sakurai, please!) I'm happy.

If we can turn off control stick jumping (which I'm assuming we can), uptilts will be MUCH easier. I'm pretty pumped for the update today :)

P.S. Is there an easy way to do tilts in melee? I either jump or have to slowly tilt the stick up.

You dont need to tilt your stick all the way to do a tilt. Just move it slightly.

Do you think they would allow turning off buttons completely?

Being the weird person I am, I would turn off everything on the right side but A and B; then I'd be happys.

(Yes, I know using the stick to jump isn't generally smart; but it is a physical impossibility for me to use the jump buttons properly.)

I will disable stick jumping, and put BOTH B and Y as special attack buttons.

PHEAR MY INSANELY EASY SHDL AND JC SHINES!!!!

EDIT: actually, for space animals (mainly Falco, if he's in and plays similarly >.>), I might keep stick jumping, because it feels more natural and quicker to flick it back up to jump out of the shine.

Well, here the problems I have, so maybe setting my controls will fix them:

- Grab: I use both L+A and Z, L+A to shield then grab after the opponent lags and Z for like speedy grabs. Sometimes when I try Z, I shield when I'm not trying, only when I'm standing still, not with the jump cancel. I thought it was my baby at first (I call my controller "my baby") but I used others and it still happened. Making it so Z grabs and nothing else would be cool (I'll specifically be using "My Baby"a.k.a. my GC controller).
- Up Strong Attacks (aka U-tilt): Ugh! Sometimes, I'll be Sheik and try a u-tilt, and that b---- jumps and does a u-air. If you could make so the control stick didn't jump, that'd be nice. It would also help with aiming up with the Cracker Launcher, so you didn't jump while to aiming up (if you can even jump with that big-a-- thing). Might f--- up jump-canceling a grab, though.

And yeah, I jump with Y. Maybe whatever button you don't use to jump could be the button you reserve your Final Smash with, if they can even be reserved. At first I wasn't feelin' the whole button configuration thing, but I never thought about the jumping problem and grabbing problem until I read this thread. As long as people don't do stupid s--- like make L the regular attack button, it's an alright feature, I guess.

With this new button configuration addition, there will be way more possibilities than I would've imagined. Think about it! There's going to be about forty or so characters in Brawl, and if we randomly assign ourselves weird control scheme, we're bound to perform new techniques. There might also be the possibility of being able to execute certain techniques, combos, and abilities with a certain control scheme while using a certain controller. However, one controller configuration will be better than the other, and by the end of Brawl's life, it is possible that many people will be using one control scheme.

But that's just my idea :O

I just want to disable jumping with the Control Stick.
I'm pretty sure that a statistical most of us can agre with this statement.

. . . And Z is on the Nunchuck, for future reference. Though, it's not really anything like the Z on the Gamecube controller, when you think about it.

hmmm after some consideration i think i would make these slight changes.
Disable up as jump (cause everyone else is doing it and i want to fit in)
switch z to jump and y to grab. (i use x to jump btw)
That way if im playing a space animal i could do the stuff that requires quick hand speed easier w/o having to change much of my muscle memory (i would only do my JC grabs differantly with other chars)

Y = Jump
X = Double Jump
Y = Air Dodge

Ultimate Wavedash. :)
I'll be turning off jump with controller stick if it's optional.
