It would be better to give each character a blocking animation instead of the usual bubbles

Shielding should not be removed.

Also, the reason why teh bubble's there is most likely so that the players know that they have a guard up easily. If they just got into a defensive position, you might not notice it and screw up. Or something. <_<

I'm fine with the current shield system, but I agree that it could be cool to remove them and force the player to rely on dodging and rolling. It would really change the way you play defensively, and would keep the players moving quite a bit more, causing the battles to be more fluid. They could also just make it harder to shield. For example, instead of just putting up a shield that lasts until it breaks, they could replace it with a block/parry move (like in Soul Caliber II). That would be cool, because not only would you be blocking your opponents move, but you would open them up for countering as well (and on top of that, it would take more skill because you would have to time your block rather then just pressing L really fast).

That would make Brawl lose some it's Smash feel. Seriously, rolling isn't ALWAYS going to be the best solution, there's lag when you roll, no matter how little they make it, and if rolling has no lag than rolling will be a broken mess that noobs will abuse.

My advice:

If it ain't broke don't fix it. That's how games turn out so ********, they find something that works and they change for the sake of changing it and screw themselves over.

At this rate Brawl is going to be a ******** mess of 'fixes'.

EDIT: If you don't shield is SSBM, chances are, you're a newb. If you complain about people shielding, you're a scrub. Nothing is wrong the with current shield system so I don't see why they should leave us open to all attacks with nothing but a roll.

I didn't bother to read all the replies in this post, but Red Exodus's caught my eye. If you were to read the original post from the author, he clearly talks about alternatives to shielding. Sidedodge/Roll/Wavedashing. I for one agree w/ him in that it would give the game a more fluid feel to it. Jump also has a good point w/ his Rock-Paper-Scizzors concept, but I think variations of the dodge could just as easily replace shield in his concept! :D The shield looks stupid, too. If they do keep it, they shoud make it clear, or at least something manlier than pink.

Those aren't substitutes, they merely serve as options for other situtations. I remember 1 time I got knocked in front of a C. Falcon charging a Falcon punch and as soon as my character stood up I blocked it and took advantage of the lag.

Also, shields serve as reflectors or protectors from spam. You aren't going to be able to dodge a wave of Samus missles from a pro, and if he just fires 1 it's probably to make you do something he want you to [i.e. mindgames].

Shielding keeps options available and reduce predictablity. If there was just spot dodging, rolling, air dodging and wavedashing, you'd have less options and get [god I hate to use this term] mindgamed more often.

Just imagine that if ther characters like Falco had there SHL and Samus could still spam missiles the way she does (Hehe i main samus so i know how imba she is) then characters without projectiles will get pwned by projectiles (with the exception of Marth against missiles)

this wuld lead to an unholy amount of camping and spamming making this game unbearable for most people

(although they could just set the knockback and stun of each projectile to 0 but that would be a whack *** game that i would never play )

That;s the same point I was making, it's not like you can roll and spotdodge every single projectile shielding is there for a reason, some of these scrubs don't seem to realize it.

I thought something similar about the shields when I saw them absent from the Brawl trailers. They're definitely hiding something. But I doubt they'll remove the shield--I think they've updated it. I very much would like to think the reason they haven't shown us the bubble yet is because it's been replaced with character-specific guarding, like Yoshi's egg. The generic glowy orb just wouldn't cut it in the third incarnation of this franchise. Imagine Link actually using his Hylian shield or Metaknight throwing his cape around him. Different shields could have different techniques, as well, adding to the immersion of the gameplay.

as people may have also noticed, many of the sounds, chracter make were gont too. you don't hear
Pikachu's 'pika' when he does the f-smash
Mario's 'yahoo!' when he does vB
Link and Mario's sreams when they went flying off the top from Kriby's ^A
Link's 'hyaaak' when he does ^B
who-knows-what with Wario, Pit, Meta-Knight, ZSS, and Snake
~Tera253~
the game isnt done yet , i think its coming out in like December or something

they could be waiting to be adding that stuff it might look better without it

and i dont think that they would remove the shield, its too important and useful

oo im not a smash n00b anymore :)

I'm fine whether they have the shields in there or not. I was looking at the trailers again though, and you can definitely see the characters doing something like a roll (specifically metaknight and pitt), and you do not see their shields pop up. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you basically always see someone's shield pop up for a splitsecond before they roll?

Of course, you could also argue that metaknight putting his cape around himself and turning invisible was part of his "specialized" shield. Personally, I think the idea of everyone having their own unique shield is really cool.

Britain, glaring at you **** yanks.
I doubt that there arent shields in the game because they havent made individual blocks for each character.

Imagine Link actually using his Hylian shield
If you crouch, some projectiles will be blocked by the sheild, same if you are standing up and standing facing the projectile. Samus' missiles are one example of blockable objects with links sheild.

That would still be ********, then it'd only block in one direction. Just let this ******** idea die.

Being able to magically block everything around you in a circle seems more ******** to me. But I can understand why you might want them to stay. I don't shield too much anyway.

The idea of Link using his shield and the idea of shields being absent. Link sucks enough already, limiting way to protect himself would make him suck more.

Whatever they do choose to do, I think it will work out great. They have had way more time to work on Brawl than they had on Melee, so I think that Brawl will be a better game in most aspects, including the shield.

So yeah, don't worry too much about the shield; because whatever they do, it will be cool.
