OK so.. I recently discovered how good drillgrabs are for Fox, but which are the most common ways people have to defend themselves from it? Is it possible to crouch cancel the drill in order to avoid the grab?

You can't CC Fox's drill.

You can shine out of it or buffer a sidestep/roll.

shine beats grab. Its not hard to understand the framework when you think about it. Also, the whole point of spamming dair against CC'ers' like Peach and Samus is because of what ZoSo said; you can't CC it.

Just shine to thunders, its an instant momentum changer.

actually I'm planning to use it against Marth/Fox/Sheik/Falco, so I'm more interested in how it works/gets countered by those characters. I just have too much problems grabbing those guys for some reason. Still a good choice againt Peach/Samus/Low Tiers anyway..

It all depends on how far the last hit of the drill is from the ground, then your timing of the grab post l-cancel. It's not uncommon for the other player to have time to escape, honestly though, once somone becomes resigned to getting drill grabbed/shined try throwing and up smash in sometimes.

the drill doesnt technically combo into anything besides shine or jab

u can roll/sidestep/shine or possibly jab urself before fox grabs u, but it takes good timing or a buffer

drillgrabs are pretty solid, although i consistently buffer roll out, but if it works they are good especially for ur version of pal where marth falls from shine

To get out of a drillgrab, just buffer roll. To do that shield the drill, hold L or R and hold the C-stick left or right. This makes you roll as soon as the shield stun is gone. There is no timing necessary.

if my opponents manage to shield they're usually able to grab me out of my drill as well. This might be due to bad timing/l-cancel on my side, however I still hate it. That's also why I usually find myself in trouble approaching opponents. I haven't really found any realiable approach as Fox. Yeah, I know there is no uncounterable pattern in melee, but still, I find myself getting ***** too much when attacking. The bad thing is I really don't like camping so as much as possible I usually try to approach but usually fail.. any advices for that? xD

huh? if u lcancel and shine, u should be good. if they get knocked out of shine range, just jab. i never really have a problem with hitting shields, its trapping them in shield thats the problem

I find ANAs to be a way safer approach, both because they can be L-canceled more easily and they are better for spacing. Drills cover a horrible horizontal distance which is bad as I need to set them up most of the time and can't therefore be used at any time of need. The problem is Nairs don't lead easily to grabs and sometimes I get grabbed too (not to mention that there are just 2342412 other ways to stop them). Also, as Falco I find it a lot easier to cross over opponents shield using Nairs.. dunno why lol.

As to put them in shield well.. running around like crazy is usually good, the more they feel pressure, the more they will feel like shielding. Also if you know your opponent's hitboxes well enough, you can use Nairs/Bairs to counter almost anything from them so that shielding will be their only valid option. I guess it's easier said than done though
