Nerd alert. I love my Marvel. I also love my "What if?" scenarios. And this is one of them.
Ok, so considering how powerful both the Phoenix Force and Thanos are in the Marvel universe, it really does surprise me that both of them have never actually fought each other in the comics. Instead of just a battle that would likely be a stalemate (the Phoenix Force is basically indestructible, and Death literally banned Thanos from dying), what if Thanos decided to use his head like he always does and attempt to siphon the Phoenix Force to himself so he could control it?
The reason I ask this theoretical what if situation is two-fold:
- Avatars of the Phoenix Force are telepaths, and Thanos just happens to be a ridiculously powerful telepath to begin with. Case in point, he got very close to taking over Galactus's mind via psychic assault!
- Second, and more importantly, Thanos has had a knack for acquiring powerful cosmic items in the past, from the Cosmic Cube to the Infinity Gems all the way up to the Heart of the Universe. He is used to dealing with and using some of the Marvel universe's most powerful stuff, and trying to control the Phoenix Force wouldn't be out of Thanos's league at all.
Could the Mad Titan actually pull this off and take over the Phoenix Force? Personally, I say yes simply because Thanos is too smart not to be able to figure out a way to do it. Maybe I'm missing something though, but I have just been DYING to see these two duke it out and tear the universe asunder.
And yes, I know this would make for a great "What If?" issue
