Are you only able to use the old controllers from the wii? I noticed the Pro controller turned off when i went into the wii menu

You can only use the standard Wii controllers - Wiimote, Wiimote + Nunchuk, and Classic Controller. The Gamepad, Wii U Pro controller, and GC controllers won't work.
This applies to all Wii games on Wii U.
