Controller settings make a huge difference with Samus

Alright, so the better Samus players on this board already know this, so you guys can stop reading here.

For those who are still trying to improve their skill with Samus' techniques like me, I'll get straight to the point.

I had been playing as Samus under the default controller method for the GC. So when I moved the c-stick on the ground I did smash attacks, and when in the air I did aerials. I didn't think changing the controller method would make much of a difference in my playing, so I didn't bother adjusting anything.

For some reason, I decided to try to new methods. The first was to change c-stick to special moves. The difference it made was a bit ridiculous. Now I can mix homing missiles and smash missiles while missile canceling. So I'm short hopping and firing a homing missile and landing with a super missile, or vice versa, or double homing missiles, or double super missiles. It may not sound like much, but the ease with which I can pull this off now is outstanding. I can retreat with missiles now, when before it was such a chore since I was under the default method.

The other adjustment I tried under a different name was to change the c-stick to normal attacks. So now when I tap C-up I'm doing the Utilt. Sounds like no big deal, but yesterday I was doing nothing but trying to combo Fair to Dtilt and have it register in training mode as a true combo. After the adjustment to the controls I can pull it off consistently, like it's no big deal.

Something so insignificant drastically improved my game. To those who are still playing under the default settings and having difficulty with some of the things I was having difficulty with, try making the adjustments I did.

Thanks for reading :samus2:

Glad to hear you found something that worked for you.

Personally I use the default controls, no changes. i played so much melee that i got used to it. i tried messing around with different jump buttons, or the c-stick change. but in the end it just made me mess up. So I'm sticking with defaults ^_^

It really is nice that people can make whatever controls they feel comfortable.

samus has NOT been working for me at all, but maybe such changes could really help me and bring me back to samus.

I turned off the "Tap Up" for jumping. Whenever I wanted to perform another u-air, it was already used in my first u-air. Furthermore, Pit players recommend those who play as Pit turn off the "Tap Up."

Yeah, tap jump disabled helps more than you could even imagine o_O

... Thats about all GCN controller changes I made. Don't judge me >:O

BUT! I DID switch the WiiMote+Nunchuck's buttons around a bit... I now evade with the B, and use the control pad for specials... It actually helps, a LOT. Sad thing is, I still can't find a way to tap jump rather than tilt jump.

I'd turn off tap jump myself, but up-b outta shield is just too good.

I like the standard settings, but I find this a rather interesting post, as it is an example of how Samus encourages developing individual playing styles more than any other character I can think of.

Indeed, I may just start experimenting with the control options myself.

I disable the tap jump as well. It always irritated me in melee and now I can finally turn the **** thing off.

I've started using the remote and nun chuck more. The buttons are closer to each other than the GC controller which helps me get used to the new timing for missile canceling. On the mote 'n' chuck, I use the left D-pad button for specials, the down D-pad button for jumping, A is Attack, and B is shield.

Back when I was using the GC controller, I had grab set to Y for zairing and I had the side taunt set as shield so I wouldn't be open if I accidentally pressed the side D-pad button whilst trying to transform.

Edit: I loved super missiles so much in melee that I would use them whenever I could, even at point blank. Now that homing missiles have become more prominent I've needed to use them more but now I'm having trouble getting my homing missiles out without moving forward and screwing up my spacing. I can't do it whilst standing still. I turned to the c stick hoping that it would let me do homing missiles but they were smash missiles instead.

Yea, with the c stick you still have to hold forward to do homing missiles. Using that just helped me mix homing and super in different situations. Instead of having to smash for super and tilt for homing, now all I have to do is tilt for homing, and that made the execution easier for me, though I could still do it under the default controls.

I pretty much exclusively use the Wiimote+Nunchuck now, and I think I've finally found the perfect setup (at least for me), and it seems to work really well with samus

I leave attack on the default A, and set specials to down on the D-pad, so that I can cover both buttons with my thumb, elimating the need to move it at all usually. I have B set to my jump so that jumping feels a lot easier. Z is still the shield, and I have the left and right buttons set to grab, for easy zairs.

I'm expirmenting with C set to attack and up on the D-pad is up-smash, which could help pull off thing's like Snake's mortar slide with having to use shake smash (at least, that's the theory)

I just use the default cube controls. I can pull of pretty much everything doing so, so there isnt really a need to change the controls around.
