Competitive Aspects of Yo-Kai Watch that the Pokemon Company could learn from

Before I get into this, please understand that I'm not trying to say that one title or franchise is better than the other. That kind of thing is very much up to preference. I'm an extremely loyal Pokemon fan and absolutely love the game both casually and competitively. I also am a very big fan of Yo-Kai Watch, feel as though it's way too much of its own thing to actually be considered a Pokemon clone (trust me, I thought the same way before actually playing it) and love it both casually and want to see how it progresses competitively.

My goal behind this post has 2 purposes:
1. To introduce Yo-Kai Watch to fellow Pokemon fans and a bit about its competitive metagame.
2. To show how it has competitive aspects that the Pokemon Company could improve on or change to make things easier for those that want to get into its competitive side.

I'm not necessarily whining or complaining about the way Pokemon handles getting into the competitive scene. I'm just pointing out things I've noticed that Yo-Kai Watch has borrowed from Pokemon and improved upon to make getting into it competitively much much simpler.
Also, please bear in mind that I'm using Yo-Kai Watch 2 as my main example. Yo-Kai Watch 2 is significantly different from the original in that it allows online and local battles that have formed its own metagame, has online and local trading and offers a greater sense of control over your Yo-Kai and what they do as opposed to the original game making you sit back and let your Yo-Kai do their own thing.

So without further ado, here are the competitive aspects of Yo-Kai Watch that I've noticed the Pokemon Company and Game Freak could learn from.

• YO-KAI WATCH HAS AN IN-GAME TIERING SYSTEM

It is impossible to make a game with hundreds of unique monsters and have the game be perfectly balanced. All the monsters would have to be exactly the same for the game to truly be balanced but that would just be boring and rob the game of any form of variety and creativity. Those that understand such a concept in Pokemon formed the Smogon community, which gets alot of unwarranted hate over this fact. Even the official VGC meta of Pokemon with its seemingly less restrictive banlists has proven that players gravitate towards the strongest and most useful options with Pokemon like Xerneas, Mega Kangaskhan and Primal Groudon in VGC 2016.

The developers at Level-5 understood this entirely and did something very helpful about it: They made the game have its own pseudo-tiering system by separating the Yo-Kai into their own Ranks.

Have you ever played a game like Sonic Generations or Fire Emblem Fates where your scores or the power of one of your pieces was decided by a lettered rank? Yo-Kai Watch has a similar concept. Yo-Kai Watch has Ranking system going from E to D, C, B, A and S all dependant upon qualities of the Yo-Kai mainly focusing on availability, statistical power and viability.

Allow me to elaborate by using commonly known Generation 1 Pokemon as cross-samples:

• E Rank: Monsters that fall into this rank are the bottom of the barrel. They're the most common and underwhelming monsters you'll ever face. Pokemon like Caterpie would belong here.
• D Rank: Monsters that fall into this rank aren't as common as E-Ranks but are still pretty low in stats. Pokemon like Pikachu would belong here.
• C Rank: These are your mid-tier monsters. They're all average in stats, give or take a few but are harder to find. Pokemon like Nidoking or perhaps Magmar would go here
• B Rank: They're significanly above average and on the harder side to obtain. Pokemon like Mr.Mime or Clefable would go here.
• A Rank: These are your more powerful monsters without being absolutely top tier and are among the hardest to get. Pokemon like Starmie or Gengar would go here.
• S Rank: These are the abosolute best of the best. The top tiers, if you will. They're also the hardest to get. Pokemon like Mewtwo would belong here.

If you're wondering why this whole ranking thing matters, it's because it allows players to set their own rules with greater ease. Want to play with your favorite mid and low tier monsters? Set your personal bans to C-Rank or below. Want to go all out? Set your bans to B-Rank or above or even set it to all S-Ranks. Organizing monsters like this allows a greater sense of freedom so that players can pick and choose what they want to play with and against without debating over any official ruleset.
Though there probably should be one for monsters that have obnoxiously strong effects despite being low rank like the Nosirs but that might depend person to person:

• YO-KAI WATCH HANDLES NATURES DIFFERENTLY

I'm sure most of you have always loved those Pokemon you've developed feelings for on your journey across whatever region you prefer. You feel like your bond with them makes you strong. Then you go online and have your entire team swept by a tryhard using Choice Scarf Garchomp. As it turns out, all those Pokemon you've loved just don't stack up to the ones genetically superior through IVs and Natures nor do they excel in their best areas due to bad EV distribution. You have to hatch eggs with the right Natures, Abilities and IVs to improve your chances of winning in favor of the friends you've bonded with.

I have no idea if Yo-Kai Watch actually has any concept similar to IVs, so please correct me or educate me on that if it does.

Yo-Kai Watch makes the whole problem with Natures seem irrelevant. Every Yo-Kai you get automatically comes with a Nature that actually helps them in the area they're best at. For instance, Yo-Kai that are part of the Brave Tribe excel in physical attack power. Instead of getting a Brave Yo-Kai that gets a randomly decided Nature like in Pokemon, the Brave Yo-Kai automatically comes with a Nature that increases its Attack stat upon its levelling up. No need to breed for a change of nature or catch a different one.

So what if you wanted to change that Nature to something that will raise Speed or Defense? There's no breeding or anything like that. So instead, Yo-Kai Watch allows you to buy in-game items with in-game money that let you change your Yo-Kai's Nature to whatever you want. You can have your Yo-Kai level up for a while with an HP-raising Nature for a while and then switch it to a Defense-raising Nature later on if you choose to without having to waste time on an entirely different Yo-Kai of the same species.

So in conclusion, I believe that if Game Freak were to incorporate these aspects of Yo-Kai Watch to their own games, it'd help players get into the competitive scene on the cartridge much much easier. I'm not saying they WILL. I'm just saying that it would be really nice. Then again, that kind of thing is what Pokemon Showdown is for because the main games require too much grinding, which Yo-Kai Watch has apparently tried to help its players do less of.

I guess in a way, the Pokemon's ranking would be determined by its base stat total. For an example...

E-tier: Less than 256
D-tier: 256 - 355
C-tier: 356 - 455
B-tier: 456 - 555
A-tier: 556 - 660

Care to elaborate? Seeing as how Pokemon has been out so long, the developers seem to have learned alot from Pokemon and capitalized off Pokemon's mistakes.

Believe it or not, the same stupid gimmick is actually part of Yo-Kai Watch as well.
This Yo-Kai is called Zerberker.

It's an A-Rank Fire-Type that's part of the Brave Tribe, so it has phenomenal physical Attack power. It's an offensive threat. However, you will never see it being used because of its Ability (Skill) Annoyance. Randomly, it'll attack an ally. With its strong Attack stat, that becomes more of a hindrance than a help as it could randomly KO one of your own Yo-Kai.

However, Yo-Kai Watch actually has another work-around for Yo-Kai with crummy Abilities. You know about Shinies, right? In Pokemon, a Shiny is just the same Pokemon of a different color. In Yo-Kai Watch there are sorts of 'shiny recolors', if you will that look like the original but can have different colors, stats, elements, can be significantly better and are even treated as their own species.

This is Snartle.

It's an S-Rank Ice-Type of the Brave Tribe that has significantly stronger stats than Zerberker. But what REALLY sets it apart is its Ability. Instead of Annoyance, it has the Ability Sword Hunting: For every opponent Yo-Kai that it knocks out, it gains a boost to it's Attack stat making it one of the more powerful options for sweeping.

Imagine a world where Slaking's shiny form got Guts or Archeops' Shiny form got Gale Wings...

Yokai watch is much more simplistic than that.

Pokemon could have awesome stats but a small movepool could prevent it from reaching a higher tier. Pokemon could be awesome but could have all the weaknesses in the world making it more or less useless.

You also have various ways of giving them slight advantages with EV's. Maybe this pokemon has just enough speed EV's that it'll outspeed something it normally wouldn't giving it an advantage. But this one has slightly higher defense and can survive a hit it normally wouldn't be able to. The opponent is going to have to compensate for not knowing the exact EV spread the opponent is using. It could cost him the game.

I mentioned the Yo-Kai Nosirs. They have an obnoxiously powerful Ability that make them a competitive staple but their stats and the fact that they're common and easy to get are what keep them at Rank D.

I also mentioned the Yo-Kai Zerberker. It has powerful stats and it's on the rare side to make itself a Rank A, but its terrible Ability keeps it from seeing any competitive usage.

There are plenty of other Yo-Kai that are held back by lackluster moves, bad typing, Abilities and stats over other Yo-Kai despite being at a high or top tier Rank and vice versa with stronger attributes with lower tier stuff, just like in Pokemon.

You can do the exact same thing with Yo-Kai Watch since it's easy to change stat-boosting natures and level up so you can change their stats however you want and, just like in Pokemon, the levels are reset in competitive so they have the stats they would have at that level from all those investments.

I kinda wish that Pokémon would make official tiers, but at the same time I don't. It would be nice to do an online battle without facing your generic team of [primal pokemon], [mega rayquaza], [starter pokemon], [legendary]x3. My team of favorites (all UU and under) just can't do anything even with EV training and superior strategy. However, if the Pokémon company would make official tiers, we all know that they would be horribly unbalanced. They probably would look mostly at stats and obtainability. They would most likely ignore or underrate the effects of abilities, movepools, and typing.

Take Mawile for example. Mawile has been placed into Ubers due to its mega evolution. However, Mega Mawile has a stat total of just 480, which is extremely small compared to the rest of the ubers, and it is a pretty common pokémon that isn't even an evolved form. However, it is absolutely insane in everything except its stats. Mawile's abilities are extremely useful, as it uses intimidate to cut the attack of whatever it gets sent in against, then mega evolves and its ability changes to huge power, doubling its attack stat and as a result giving it the highest attack stat in the game! Its typing (Steel/Fairy) is arguably the absolute best competetive typing right now, as really the only type that can seriously threaten it is fire, and Mawile can just run a coverage move plus sucker punch to even beat out most fire types. Speaking of those moves, Mawile's movepool is great thanks to iron head, play rough, sucker punch, and many other great coverage moves. So based off of Yokai's tier system, a Pokémon like Mawile would likely be severely underrated, and would dominate the meta like nosirs.

Even Smogon's tiers, which are constantly adapting and changing and undergoing testing to reflect the power of every Pokémon, still have flaws as people are constantly arguing about the placement of various pokémon, and the tiers are still not static after years of play. I'm not sure if in game tiers would fix more problems than they would create. Smogon provides the closest thing to being able to use less powerful pokémon and a balanced battling experience right now, but if there were official pokémon tiers, it would no doubt cause huge debates on whose tiers are better, and split the competitive community.

I'm not sure whether I want in game tiers or not. Honestly, if they only just banned legendaries from online random battles, I would be happy. Legendaries are the only pokémon that the game calls superior to other pokémon, as it is a central idea to pokémon that every single pokémon (in final form) has the potential to be amazing with the right training and strategy, so making tiers saying that certain pokémon are objectively better than others would conflict with that idea. I just want to play against unique teams that don't rely on stats and legendaries to win!
