When you jump, there are frames where your character is still on the ground during the jumping animation. When you input the up smash while your character is still on the ground in his/her jumping animation, you will cancel your jump into an up-smash. It's the only way to up-smash out of a dash, shield, and shine, if I recall correctly.

Thanks guys! I'll give that a try. And I know this is a Melee forum and that most of you guys probably hate Brawl, but me being an ex-Brawl player, I can't help but think of the techniques in that game haha. Is what we're talking about right now in any way related or similar to the DACUS? I got pretty good at that in Brawl. Except we're cancelling the jump instead of the dash attack?

It's not quite the same, but there are similarities I suppose. iirc with the dacus you're canceling a move (d.atk) into another move (usmash), but keeping momentum from the first move. What jump canceling does is give you a frame or two where you can perform standing moves from a dash, because those frame are available during the startup of a jump which can obviously performed while dashing without having to stop. Your velocity stops completely when JCing.

I think I'm being a bit redundant though, am I answering your question? :p
