is there any scenario where you should upsmash people on the edge instead of dsmash? I have found much more usefull dsmash, but maybe i'm missing something...

Yes

If you're in a situation where someone regrabbed the edge and they're too far away for you walk up and dsmash you could probably punish them with a running up smash.

Does the Up smash have to be properly spaced?

Yes, some characters are much harder than others. In order to land it, you have to aim the upsmash at their head, otherwise it won't hit. Charizard and Bowser Jr. are by far the easiest characters to hit with it.
