A couple of months ago I put up a thread detailing a study I performed on the character usage percentages in 1v1 For Glory. However, when proposing the idea I was informed by one of the members on the board that 1v1 FG would not be the mode they expected people to be interested in. With no specific mode to look to, I decided to do a similar study on the only other mode I really like and could study by myself, 2v2 For Glory (1 player). This thread will therefore include my findings thus far regarding character usage in this mode.
So, first thing first, the method.
1: Rather than simply tallying every character I played against, I counted only the first characters any given group of player used, so as to avoid any bias caused by counterpicking against my own character.
2: After playing and given group, I left to the lobby selection screen before returning. I'll be honest, I'm not 100% certain how matchmaking works for the online system, but this was taken as a precaution against the possibility of a matchmaking system based on consecutive wins/losses.
3: The same players was never counted twice in a row. Should re-entering the lobby match me with any of the same players that were last tallied, I would leave the lobby and look for one with 3 fresh players. This is also true for separate sessions.
4: No players were blocked at any point during this study, so as not to skew the numbers. No players were reported, either.
5: This was performed entirely on a single console, at a single location. I do not expect any variance in usage by region or console, unless a matchmaking system that sorts by the console win percentage exists (I have tracked my win rate in case it does, but at this time it does not appear relevant).
6: Samples were collected at various hours of the day, with the majority being between 4pm and 6pm EST on any given day of the week, though many were also taken throughout the day Friday through Monday. Time of day was not formally tracked, as previous studies indicated that this would not be relevant data.
With that out of the way, here's the data that I have collected thus far.
KEY: Character name | Number of matches | Percentage of matches
Highlights currently include:
, congratulations(?) on being the most commonly played character in 2v2 For Glory (1 player). Honorable mentions to and , who are 2 and 3 reps behind, respectively. Combined, the top 3 slots make up more than 15.9% of all players.
and are currently at the mean number of matches, which is also the number of matches each character would hypothetically have if every player was choosing random. Doesn't serve much purpose, but kinda cool.
, , and are currently tied for the median number of matches, putting them exactly at the center of the list for most/least commonly seen characters. Again, meaningless, but interesting.
and , appologies for being the least commonly played characters in 2v2 For Glory (1 player), especially where I have yet to see any of you. Honerable mentions to , who is 1 rep ahead. Combined, the bottom 3 slots make up less than 0.3% of all players.
A few notes before I wrap this up:
1: I acknowledge that this sample size is significantly smaller than that of my previous work. This is in part due to a greater difficulty in collecting data in this mode (lobbies take much longer to fill up, and there are more players to avoid rematches with).
2: While I may not have monitored this factor officially, I have observed what appears to be a significantly smaller player base for this mode. This would imply that the numbers for this mode are significantly less useful than those in 1v1 FG for the singular application that has been found so far for these numbers, predicting outcomes of Conquest events.
3: In spite of the smaller numbers, potentially smaller player base, etc, I was amazed to see some of the differences in representation between these modes. Watching characters known for combos and grappling like Mario and Diddy Kong absolutely drop off of the map as soon as teams were involved was fascinating, and it really makes me wonder what some of the other modes look like as well.
4: Is there another mode you would like to see studied like this? Shoot me a message, leave a comment here or in the 1v1 FG thread, and with enough interest I'll try to put some time into it.
5: This list will be updated occasionally, but it will be at a much slower rate than the 1v1 FG list. Updates will come every 165 entries (or 55 matches), because number of characters and round numbers and blah blah blah... Anyways, the current count is: 495 reps
