I hate hitting character slumps, I've been having severe trouble keeping my Mario together outside of teams, and tbh it gets aggravating when what was once my 2nd best char is now nearing one of my worst. Foxes, DK's, Samus's, and Links in particular all are giving my mario a hell of a time lately. I'm just wondering how everyone else overcomes a slump? Because it seems I've been stuck in this one for months. Maybe I outgrew mario idk lol.

I once have gotten into such slump, i couldn't use my mario for crap and i felt like all i used was fox now.

I did get really good with fox, but it just didn't feel right, didn't feel like a character i wanted to main.

You maybe have. it happens. =/ If you feel like you have but you still want to play as him, then just give him a bit more special training. he doesn't have to be your main, but he can still be someone you use.

My advice is to just learn the match-ups.

now..

This is where my character slump comes in play.
After i picked up mario again, my fox was just basically lost in transistion, and i stopped playing him.
He became(and still is) my worst character.

I either use him in lulz doubles, or friendlies.

You haven't come to re-evaluate Mario on a skill level that you have either been playing against, or what you have achieved with other characters. That if you constantly have a higher win % with other characters, yet your drawn back to Mario, you have to break old styles and work from the ground up to love playing him again.
I would suggest you focus on the very worst moves first:
-an air move that you don't use, or use the least. I like to practice N-airs and B-airs with mario, then work on D-airs, finally adding in U-airs again.
- a tilt that you haven't found a use for. Might I suggest using his U-tilt instead of his Up-smash for a week or so......
- a slam that doesn't get used... maybe switching the normal time when You would use the D-slam.... stuff like that.
Then make sure you have a maximum range for the Down+B tornado.........
Then add back in FireBalls and Up+B (Up+B back to the stage.... but don't use it normally as a counter til your done).

Once you take the time to see all of the angles you didn't work with before, or saw as weak/useless in general combat, you start to see the full character again. I feel that I get in a slump whenever I begin to use one move-set or combo pattern. Stuff like that brings me down too....... so I do this training...... And normally walk away with a few fun moments, and get stronger with what ever character I was working with. I once did a match with Luigi where I had to start every combo with either a B-air or a Dash-A, I came to love the 1000 slaps of Luigi and the 3 times I know its right to use it. Hopefully this help you out, and put some spin on your slump. Peace.

I think you just saved my Pikachu from the slump i think i WAS getting in...Uairs where consuming me lol

Seriously though this will help me a lot as i find these "slumps" come up randomly. If i have a bad match some times it sticks around and i look miserable for a while afterwards :(

Your mario seemed like your best or at least one of your best when I played it today. IDK, maybe all your other chars were slumping.

My weegee gets like that all the time... So inconsistent.

Lol I just dont play good against slow grabby falcons xD How slow your falcon moves mindgames me xDDD. I still won em all tho WHAT NOW!? well except 1 i think lol.

But yea being realistic my fox and jigglypuff and falcon are probably my only real good chars when im really trying. Anyone that knew me from back in the day and played my mario now could say that my mario sucks now. I'm honestly considering giving him up.

You hurt Doug's feelings. He's not slow, he's SPECIAL. And I took like 5 games off of your yoshi and fox and samus. Don't hate.

And we were both playing ultra-serious, amirite? ;)

This is how I prevent character slumps:

When I play, I play several characters. I don't just stick to one for 5 hours. Unless I'm practicing a single character or matchup for a reason, I rarely play the same character twice in a row (well... depends on the situation).

Also, I try weird things when I play, e.g. combos that shouldn't be combos, moves that I never use, etc. Basically, I experiment. This way, some things that I experimented on may actually be useful later, and I may build on.

So... yeah. I just play every character, and experiment with them all.

I find it rare to get in a character slump. I get what I call "Smash cravings", sometimes I just have to go to Training Mode on p64 to do some combos with the whole cast. It's nearly impossible to not do and they just creep up randomly regardless if I'm involved in something else. It's a real nuisance. =(

I'm the same as BY in the sense that I tend to swap characters after every match and generally after I've played every character once will I repeat a character.

In friendlies, I usually close and open the screen so that I get a random character and use that (inb4dumbmythsaboutitcausingds), but some characters still fall out of practice because there are some characters random NEVER gives me (Puff, DK, Pikachu, Mario).

To prevent DS online, I close and open the screen, but then manually select the character that it showed. So on my screen, it randomized to a Luigi CPU, I then manually choose Luigi. On my opponent's screen, it could randomize to a Ness, but having manually selected afterwards, my character chosen was a Luigi. This is how I prevent DS from randomizing.

Obviously, when it shows a character it's for the CPU, so you wouldn't be able to play without manually selecting. But people still tell me it causes ds, which is dumb.

why do I feel we both have the same syndrome. I just have urges to practice my nair chains for no particular reason at the most random times. It kind of annoys me/freaks me out. Putting that aside my nair chains have gotten so good lol.

Haha it's very infuriating at times when I see my controller sitting there and my hands just itching to pick it up and start playing.
