remember in the orginal ssb where you would select your character and they had a model of them at the bottom doing an animation. and in Melee they just had still portraits of the character. should they bring it back.

Yes, they should. The only problem with that is the memory issues that it may cause. They have to bring all the models right to the menu when you open it. I don't want a preloader for a menu.

Nah, I prefer the pictures. =o

It'd be alright to see both, the model in front of the picture, but that would cause a bit of lag for the Wii, and it's too much work for something that's not really needed.

So, Pictures ftw.

yeah. i think the original SSB overall had a lot of character to it. with the specific character intros for everybody and like i stated before the animations. i think Melee was lacking in that a little. it felt alot more serious compared to the first one.

I prefer the pictures to the animation. If they do include the animations, for memory sakes, I'd say that they should have the characters do one of their B (or whatever it's going to be) moves instead of a totally new animation (like in SSB).

It's only like a 3 second animation, I doubt it'd take up that much memory.

I liked the animation in Mario Kart 64. All the characters were positioned to the right and just blinked every so often. Simple and sweet.

if the 64 could do it with no lag, why couldnt a far superior system do it?? i dont think there would be any lag, and they should bring this back cuz its the little details that seperate the good games from the great games. not sayin it would make or break brawl, but it wouldnt hurt

40 +/- characters.
High rendered models.
4 character slots.

It might cause some lag. =p

But mostly, I just really like the pictures far better than the models, but I guess that's just me. o.<

I liked having a chorus of "Yoshi!" on the 64. I enjoyed watching the character I selected actually react.

All true, but the Wii should be built to handle it, but then again that doesnt mean it is....

What I would actually like to see is to run a "mini-stage" in the player's character frame. As in, the in-game models, fully controllable. First of all, it would be practical; new players could try out the characters without starting a match, and players would have something to do while other people picked their characters. Second, it would require less memory than running a full game, and the system should have no problem running it.

Mini-stage? I think that would be a bit much for picking characters but if it were an option, I guess it would be a fun thing to do

Regarding the whole.. "Memory Usage"
From my experience working with the Unreal Engine and making models for Unreal Tournament 2004.. "Mario,” “Luigi” and "Samus." I have to say that animating a model is the more time consuming when compared with time that takes modeling and texturing the model.
Though the memory animations take up in any game are very small. Animations are just text and numbers (code).. Textures/graphics and music/sound take up the most memory.. Even the models/wireframe without textures take up little memory.

So I would think character animations for the selection menu could be done.

Just so everyone knows..
1 model.. 1 texture.. And then there is the animations that move it around.. And the code that tells the model w/ texture when and what to animate or do.
So adding an extra animation for the character selection is fairly easy..

Just look at the game Time Splitters: Future Perfect.
On the multiplayer selection screen, the characters are animated when selecting them.

You forgot that N64 took cartridges instead of CDs.

I loved the little animations in SSB64. I really hope that they come back for Brawl. It wouldn't take up that much memory, and it really gave a lot of feeling to the characters, at least IMO. I was shocked Melee did away with them.

I love it when people act like they know what they're talking about. The models are already on the disk. When you select a level, it takes less than a second to render the characters, the stage, and the background. It would take maybe 1kb of memory due to code, not due to the actual rendering. Either learn to program or stick to the facts, cause i'm tired and feel like b***in people today. -rep 4 me!

what the should bring back is having the thing where it counts down and as it counts down each chracter enters the field in a special way, like mario coming out the pipe or pikachu coming out of a poke ball then the match will start

Actually, that stage idea doesen't sound too bad. If it's doable. Players can "warm up" for a few seconds before everyone is ready.

Pictures, i say though. I would mind animated portrates like blinking and breathing faces, but I actually think the pictures have more personallity than the little fighting character. I mean, you never see a close up of their faces. Just the same battle model you'll see in two seconds when the match starts.
