Character Guides

Just wondering... is anyone interested in character guides... in either using them or making them?

What I'm thinking that we could do is have one stickied topic which has a link to each character guide, and then have 12 unstickied character guides for each character. This way, all the guides will be easily accessible through the stickied topic, no matter when the last post for that topic was.

Well... I've got some spare time this week (reading break), so I'll be making a Jigglypuff guide (my best character). If anyone is interested, you can make a guide of any other character in the game. Fox is already being done, and I'm doing Puff, so any of the other 10 characters are available for making a guide.

If anyone wants to make a guide but does not know what to do, then check the melee or brawl guides, and go from there.

Any opinions/thumbs up/thumbs down?

Note: if you are interested in making a guide, post the character here. This way, we don't get 5 people posting a guide for the same character, and have 4 people waste a couple of full days for nothing (writing / testing).

So far, these are who are making the guides:

Luigi: Dair
Mario: Superstar
DK:
Link:
Samus:
Captain Falcon:
Ness:
Yoshi: Korobeniki http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=221697
Kirby:
Fox: Wenbobular http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=178222
Pikachu: Kefit
Jigglypuff: Blue Yoshi (?) http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=221637

Note: most of these guides are not finished. Also, let me know if I have the wrong person doing the guide etc.

If he wants to do the rest of the cast, then it's fine with me, as long as we get all the characters. I think making a finished version of an accurate, detailed guide would take about a month (with breaks), so doing the entire cast would probably take a year for just him to do. If he knows all the characters enough to do them, and has the patience and time to do them all, then go for it :) I just thought I would do this to spread the load.

Guides are not easy to do, and do take alot of time (as I found out while doing info on a couple of attacks for puff).

Smoke2Joints and KoRo did some alreasy i think...search it up!

Superstar was working on a Mario one too..dunno how that went
that wasn't that much of a guide, it was a more of a "your level of smash"

Id prefer to do a normal Yoshi guide.

Fox is my main, heh. I could probably do a decent Falcon guide with Winston's help, but I don't think I could do guides for many of the other characters, especially weird ones like Yoshi with character specific tricksies that I have no idea about.

By the way, feel free to link my guide. :lick:

BHLMRO was SUPPOSED to do a Mario one, but I think he got lazy

I've been thinking of writing up a Pikachu guide for a while now. I guess I might as well finally get around to it for this.

To people making guides in progress: stuff like damage % done by a given move and a usefulness rating aren't very helpful, and just make your guides look like mediocre gamefaqs guides. Instead concentrate on an in-depth discussion of how and when to use each move, like Wenbobular did in his Fox guide.

I put the names of the people who have confirmed that they are doing the guide for a specific character. Those who are not confirmed I'll leave out until you confirm that you are doing the guide.

Woot! This and the Matchup discussion is bringing life back to the 64 boards :) Hopefully this time it will stay active :p

This is a sweeet idea, thanks Blue Yoshi.

Once there is a guide for every char this topic will be stuck to the top better than a cat on a velcro ceiling <3

I'd write some guides but I feel they will be too long and have a little too much bias. The problem with me is that unless I'm blatantly wrong I don't feel like taking advice from others.

I'm not interested in pure facts like how much damage is this move rather than what I feel will make people a better player with that character

and fox is already taken

but I could do Samus or DK if nobody else is up for the job, I prefer DK because it will be easier

DK is easy.

Grab-->Back throw (use this a lot)

UpB (use this a lot)

DK punch (combo into this using Down B and Dair)

Actually there is some greater depth in Donkey Kong's homosexual tactics

I don't know how to do Fthrow to runoff throw into stage to UpB ;_; the inputs never work for me...
Also, I guess Winston and I could do a Captain Douglass Jay Falcon guide :bee:

I may be wrong but I think the difference between superior falcons like boom's and other worse falcons is the bigger skill and the more precise/consistent moves and combos. Not really a huge secret

I've begun writing my Pika guide. I've only finished up through B Moves and smashes so far, and I'm already at 1800 words. I'm starting to dread getting to the uair discussion...

lol yeah... I think all of us that are doing guides probably did not expect them to be as long as they are. Mine is... well... very long, and I only did two moves and a couple of combos. By the time I'm done with my guide, it would probably end up being a 20 page report on puff in 64 lol :p

Oh man, can't wait to get to the matchups. Now THAT will be long.

Writing about Pika's more versatile moves it proving to be challenging. I use moves like utilt and uair so intuitively now that I find it difficult to adequately articulate their proper use based on my own memory. I suppose I will force myself to write something out, and if it doesn't reflect reality then I will notice the next time I play >_>

Hopefully I can get the moveset done this weekend, at which point I will have enough to feel comfortable posting it. Then I can get to work on the combo theory section. I'm not sure how I will go about that, but I've got a couple of ideas.

EDIT: Managed to get something written out for utilt. 3400 words, and I haven't even started on the aerials yet o_O

the next thing which I plan on doing on my guide is specific combos per character

basics are done

time for the advanced stuff

1. Up tilt combos against each character, including crouch canceled and aerial up tilt hit
2. DJC combos
3.Approaches per character (probably most difficult thing for me to explain)
4. Overall: Why Yoshi is that low a tier

20-25 percent done
