Character Activator gameshark codes

I have all the codes... if anyone wants then I'll tell... where supposedly you use the character modifier and activator together, then you're a special character, then during the match you press Z, and at the end of the match the game is fooled into thinking you are Captain Falcon, and not master hand or whoever. However, my game still freezes none the less, when I press Z. Please help.

Don't worry I fixed it. You have to turn on the codes during the battle. I had turned them on when I started the game.
