CCing is really good against characters that suck against CC, like the low half of the tier list, sex kick/launcher reliant charcters like the Mario bros., etc. Develop your own applications.

Marth's crouch cancel is awesome. CC grab, CC smash, CC up tilt, CC gtfo, etc. You just have to figure out when you can use it, and what move you should use after CCing.

To CC grab you need to hold down and towards the opponent.

It's necessary.

Watch Azen play Marth for details on when and how to crouch cancel effectively. In fact, watch him to learn everything about this game...

Due to Marth's nature, sometimes when you mis-predict you will be in a situation where you will get punished. Couch cancel during such times, you can even get out of very annoying punishing techniques like knee to grab by Captain Falcon. In this case, you miss a f-smash, or the Captain shields it, then he SHFFLs a knee on you, at low percents this is pretty annoying because Captain can follow it up with a grab (they always do). Luckily, you know when you're about to get kneed, you can almost always feel in coming in situations like this where you mess up a f-smash. So after the Captain knees you (or rather during and before), you crouch cancel and then grab the Captain Falcon before he can dash and grab you. Works great to get you out of nasty situations.

Also, you can use it as a great mindgame. F-smash nothing (like be on the opposite side of the stage as the opponent intentionally missing the f-smash), and maybe they will fall for SHFFLing a n-air at you or something that can be crouch cancel grabed. Obviously, they could run and grab you and this wouldn't work. Play with it, it's good in some situations (really good at 0 percent). I use this trick against Sheik a lot, seeing all of her aerials can be crouch canceled easily. If you're looking for that kill, and Sheik jumps, just f-smash at nothing and crouch cancel punish whatever she foolishly tries to punish you with.

I see "Crystal City" instead of "crouch cancel"...

I don't think crouch-cancelling works very well as a mindgame. Regardless of what happens, you're taking damage, and I consider that bad. In this situation, you either, a.)get grabbed, thus putting you on the losing end, or b.)get hit, then grab them, possibly putting you in a good position, but you still take the damage from an attack, which will, of course, do more than the pitiful grab damage you get in comparison. And considering that Marth really doesn't get very much guaranteed from his grabs against most characters, it doesn't seem a good trade-off to me.

Either way, Marth's CCing isn't as good as, say, any character with a good dsmash, as far as I'm concerned. He just doesn't get enough out of it.

Marth actually has an amazing crouch cancel game because of his ridiculous range. I improved a lot after I start integrating it into my playstyle.

Try this:
When your opponent misses a tech, walk next to him and crouch. Seeing that you don't have your shield up, he's likely to try to hit you with his getup attack. If you crouch cancel it, you will usually slide into perfect tipper range.

And @Dreadlord Santa: You're goal isn't to go for the entire game without taking any damage. If by taking a hit you put yourself in a good position to start a combo, its worth it. Plus, cc when you're going to get hit anyways. It may seem like a small thing, but it makes a huge difference once you start applying it well.

Marths Grabs are great for setting up combos that lead to death or insane dmg. one grab on a fox and falco could mean 1 stock less to worry about. If captain falcon gets grab 1 up throw then a bunch of up tilts leaves that little 5-10% compared to the 30+ u just gave him?
fthrow samus to set up SHDFs and the list could go on.
