You have to do the d-air as soon as you jump.

If you're using a GC controller and have smashes on C-stick, you can just short/full-hop and hit C-stick down at the same time you press jump. It's probably the best way, since you can get the most horizontal movement that way.

I usually tap the jump button and hit down+attack, though I don't get much horizontal movement cause I press down on the control stick.

Be careful not to fast-fall though, because then you'll end up taking lag ._.;

It IS possible to do it with purely control stick and attack button (like if I play with wiimote+nunchuck), but you have to move your thumb fast ;_;

Personally, I prefer the Y/C-stick combination for lag cancel d-airing.

(Quick Fact: Did you also know that you can double d-air in the air two times without landing on the floor?)

Yeah, it's so much easier to roll from y to a with your one thumb while holding down on the directional. I like using that method better since it leaves the option to either grab out of a shield by tapping A or come out with a surprise d-air. I guess it's just a matter of preference for the player really.

My preference to do it easily is with L set to jump. L NEVER gets touched otherwise, and it makes it feel more natural somehow.

I think the best way to do it is pressing the analog stick up slightly to jump while pressing the C-stick down at the same time. You can get so much horizontal movement from this. Trust me, its easier to short hop with the analog in Brawl than it was in Melee.

^^ this is the technique that i use. it is also quite simple to just normal jump and down a once you've learned the timing for the c-stick way.
edit: it's useful for ganon to have tap jump ON though for 2 reasons besides this:
1. double jumping while using u-air increases jump height slightly and is EXTREMELY helpful for edgeguarding and killing horizontally
2. there is generally never a time when you want to use your u-tilt

I think that is BY FAR the easiest way too cancel the dair. its even easier on the classic wii mote it would seem.

This canceling should come naturally. ALL GANON PLAYERS need too be able too dair cancel until it becomes second nature, like breathing. This shouldn`t be a magical tech wonder that we admire 3-4 decent ganon mains apply too in thier vids.

I`m learning it as we speak. it seems easy too pick up, just gotta practice.

Hes dead on about the horizontal movement, try dair canceling across fd. after you can do this without accidently downsmashing, jump back and forth, stomping with each jump. after that try hopping across fd with back and forth stomping. see how long you can do this. the more control and accuracy your dair has, the more brutal your storm will be!

If you`re dair canceling and landing accidental downsmashes, this means you`re hitting the analog and c stick too close together. jump, then attack. The sticks arnt hit at exactly the same time on gc controllers since the cstick seems more sensitive it can take priority and give out a d-smash..
We ganon players also need too be aware of things dair cancels into. it can go STRAIGHT into a jab, an upsmash, etc. experiment!

Truly.

I mean, I hooked up to a friend's Wii the day I found out about dair autocancels and I think "OH HAI I want to try thunderstorming" so I start flickin' the c-stick down after tap jumps.

And I'm, like, getting it every time. So I figured it was easy.

I use both control schemes to input the move. . . whichever one just works for my thumbs at the moment - tap to c-stick, or Y-hop slide-to-A.
I would expect, though, the Y-input to be better for a hop in place, and the tap jump to be better for moving around.

I press "Y" and control stick down at same time, immediatly after that I slide my thumb (When I press "Y" I'm already sliding my thumb) from "Y" to "A" to perform the move without lag. I do the same with Wolf's/Ivy's Fair to land without lag and always works...

You know that the c-stick input down/left/right cancels the analoge jump don't you? As long flick the c-stick before you leave the ground (but after the jump is inputted with the analog) you will never full jump. You always get 1st frame perfect short hopped airials, that's how I do my sh dair to double jump with Wario.

I remember actually reading about this on the Ganon boards, but that was quite some time ago.

Dair canceling is really easy. Just slide your thumb off of X/Y onto A. The timing is not very strict, cause of Brawl's buffering system.
