I am curious, obviously they can do characters and stages, and they can switch out entire items, but could they add/clone extra Assist Trophies and Pokeballs?

Personally, I love Tom Nook, but doubt there'd enough to him for an entire character for battle, but I think he could make a hilarious Assist, just pop him out and he drops a house onto the stage, ala Wizard of Oz! He could even make a comment about the player owing him for the house as it crashes into people from above!

The PMBR is more focused on competitive, so items aren't a huge priority, actually I'm pretty sure the only reason that the spicy fire thing (I forget what it's called) was changed to Turbo was so they could replace all the data to allow the new game mode. Stuff like this would probably be very low, as they first have to finalize roster/character balance, god knows what new characters they may want to add (if any), if they want to introduce another new game mode, and then they have to get the single player working.

I wouldn't doubt that the could, they're brilliant programmers. They probably wouldnt though, and even if they would its probably very very low on the list

Short answer, no.

Long answer, no because all of the item files and assets are located in common3, a file which has very strict memory limits.

However, ATs and Pokeball Pokes are located outside of common3. Unfortunately there would be no room for sounds. :/
