Hey all.

Sorry if this was discussed in one of the threads (there are so many of them) but I just wonder about this character because they seem so limited and there are some match ups that are just impossible to overcome. Like ROB and Sonic for example,
I really would like to use this character seriously, but in some matches, I just find myself cowboying it up, poking cans and running away if I'm against a really fast or powerful character. I don't want the match to consist of me spamming projectiles and running away (it just isn't fun) and I don't want to be that player that trolls. But at the same time, lol that is a strategy of this character, right? I dunno, I just need some advice on this char.

Are there any really good Duck Hunts that can take down Sonics and ROBs btw?

Any character can be played competitively, you just need to spend a lot of time learning matchups, techniques, bread and butters, and reads/punishes with that character.

I've seen some pretty good DHs beat on sonic, R.O.B, and other characters, it's possible, I guess my suggestion is to find some sonic and R.O.B mains, practice the matchup, and see which things work, also its very important to learn your opponent's bad habits, and punish them

Duck Hunt gets his zones broken easily and his recovery is easily exploitable, making matchup like Falcon a nightmare. But like Aphistemi said, any character can be played competitively. Duck Hunt is one of the hardest, and this is how I think of him: he reminds me of Toon Link, only he doesn't have as many fast or powerful options when close up. Duck Hunt's item setups are amazing, and while Sonic or Falcon don't give you much time to set up, you can still catch them and convert one grab into about 30% if you can keep mind of your character and all the projectiles you have out. He also has a good ledge trump->Bair setup, so that's something. Duck hunt loses most often to slippery characters who can avoid kills, but running away and spamming projectiles the first half of a match and then completely going in and destroying your opponent seems to be his best strategy. I'll look into the sonicxDH Matchup more and see if I can't find any exploits DH has.

Honestly I think Duck Hunt is the worst character in the game, at least in customs-off.

With that in mind, you definitely shouldn't further handicap yourself by not playing to the character's advantages, such as forcing approaches, and...yeah, that's basically it. So do that.

Sonic is pretty much unwinnable in default, he dominates the neutral and is better at killing. His rewards are better and his ability to punish dhd's laggy everything just leave no exploitable weaknesses for DHD. He has to outplay sonic every step of the way.

R.O.B. on the other hand I think is only slightly uneven if not even. You just need to approach more, especially with SH/Full Hop gunmen and trick shot (this lets them avoid getting stuffed by lasers/gyro). If you remain stationary, R.O.B. wins. You can't outcamp him, don't even try. But luckily your rewards for approaching are pretty big. You get a lot of mileage out of edgeguards, too.

Just make sure to strike halberd game 2 and avoid FD to start. You do lose on halberd for sure since approaching gets you grabbed and killed while beep boop still true combos.

Overall though, DHD isn't that viable. He has too many bad matchups and has to play so differently for most neutral or even good matchups. He's like brawl sonic/tink level competitively.

Duck Hunt can be played competitively: Competitors can play on a standard NES + Zapper setup one at a time or multiple can play at once using multiple setups. A winner can be declared by the player with the highest score. In the event of a tie a tie-breaker could be a 1-stock rematch in Super Smash Bros. where both players use Duck Hunt and battle it out on the Duck Hunt stage.

If you don't like trolling people, Duck Hunt is not the character for you.
