C-stick follies

So while I'm better than most of the people I've played, but admittedly worse than 90% of the players on this forum, I can't seem to even beat the game on very hard because of my reliance on the c-stick to end my combos. While this works in Melees, it doesn't work in 1-player. I'm trying to beat very hard, and can get to the final stages, but I have too few lives remaining. Using Falco (my main), what's the best way to overcome the lack of the c-stick?

L-Cancel.. short hop.. drill shine.. with falco.. its easier if you pillar.. just practice a little bit.. you will get it.
