No, that's not referring to textures or stage hacks, its how I feel when it comes to hacking my beloved SSBB the way I want. First off, I'd like to say hello. This is my first post here, but I've been following a bit of the hacking scene for some months now. As for what I've been able to accomplish in that time, it has not been successful enough to prevent me from reaching out for some help. So please, can someone shed some light on a solution?
Here are my issues:

1. I'm a Japanese Wii owner, which a NTSC-J version of the game. Since I am new to the scene, I started with NSMBW and used Riivolution to get some custom levels in, which worked great, but when I attempted the same for SSBB, nothing seems to work as smoothly. So, after searching a few forums and wikis, I opted to use Gecko OS. This worked fine for the first few attempts at adding some custom textures to characters, but when I tried to import some custom levels, items, CSS's, and CSP/CSB's, I received nothing but crashes, freezes, and glitchy menus. I've scoured forums, tutorials, faqs, and downloaded countless .gcts, .pacs, and so on. I cannot be sure, as I am no veteran at this, but I believe if it isn't the fact that most of your hacks and codes are built from north american versions of the game, it is because of my problem #2...

2. I am a Mac user, and that means a couple of things. It means that I cannot use these magical programs I keep hearing about, such as Code Manager, Brawl Box and CSS Organizer. It also means that, unless some guy out there is willing port all those programs and materials over to Mac for a userbase that may not exist, my Brawl-hacking options will remain very limited.

All I really want is a way to make my own CSS with as many PSA Characters/textures I want. So, I'd like to implore the hacking community for help in my dilemma. And if there are any talented hackers out there willing to make some code for me, or perhaps even a Custom CSS if they are willling, I would be extremely grateful for the assistance.

This is the kind of thing I would die for:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgXrxEIIgp4

I would love a CSS similar to this guy's. Something simple, even without a fancy background. Being able to select characters like Rosalina, Wisp, Shadow, Waluigi, Ridley, Cloud, Alloys (all of which I've downloaded, but most I cannot use), individual pokemon, samuses, and shiek, as well as there originals (Peach, Purin, Sonic, Marth, etc.) so as to expand upon the selectable roster. I read that you can have up to 50 character slots.

Please tell me, can this be done? Is this prossible?

Sorry for the long post guys.

I can tell you right off the bat the freezes are caused by downloading things not meant for your region

Second you can download any txt file that has codes and use this program to edit them

Lastly i think someone found a way to get get brawlbox on mac to work or maybe it was linux not sure but i hope this helps

Since you actually own the game, I wouldn't see it as wrong to download the US version. Is that wrong? I don't know.

Parallels desktop (30 day trial then buy it or "buy it"). Or bootcamp.

That is not worth dying for!!!

Haha, I more meant the ability to have complete hacking freedom would be to die for.
Thanks Mr.Chuy,
I also found this handy website, so I don't think .gct's are as much of a problem:

http://geckocodes.org/index.php?chid=R&r=J&l=d

My biggest problem I think is making the necessary .pac's for CSS's, stages, and items.

And AMKalmar, how would I use a downloaded copy? If I need to burn it to a DVD, I don't have one at the moment as my drive is broken.

what do you want the pac's for, for PSA's, Textures, or something else?

Well, many of the sc_selcharacter.pac and stg____.pac and common3.pac's don't work on my NTSC-J version. The PSA's and textures work, but like I said, I can't get any custom CSS's, stages, or items to work. Also, many of these great PSA's that replace Alloys are unavailable to me, because I can't get the CSS necessary to select them.

Hahaha, brick wall #3 - I just found out my dog ate my SD card while I was out last night.

Well here's two CSS's that I tried, to no avail.
http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=254357

http://nintendobros.com/2010/02/10/koopa-paratroopa-update/
(This one half-worked, but the bottom row of characters were unselectable, there was no Alloys icon, and players 2-3 couldn't select a character)

An item and stages that crashed my game:

For CSS's to work correctly (mainly this one, im pretty sure its an easy solution so i wont try it out) You need a CSS Fix code and several other codes that add icons and what not. ill try finding the codes for you and making the GCT myself, that way, itll remove an obstacle for you. As for the first one, ill be testing it out tomorrow

What file replacement code are you using? the most recent one is 3.5.1, and i don't think its been ported over to Japanese region wii's and most likely the stages you tried to use end up needing File replacement 3.5.1

Thanks alot for the sympathies, Calvo819. Glad to know someone here knows the difficulties of being a Mac user.

I thought there was some missing code, but like you said I figured Japanese code wasn't up to date. Could be wrong about that, but here's where I got mine from:

http://s8.zetaboards.com/1UP_Smash_Board/topic/8148573/1/
The site's not even in english, so I can't be sure what version they've got.

Ok, so I was searching around for a way to get custom character icons on CSS's, as duplicates of the regular characters (meaning I could fight a Roy against a Marth, or a Rosalina against a Peach, etc.), and I found something called the "Clone Engine" or "Alternate File Loader". From what I've read, it seems crazy complicated and unable to work with PSA Characters. Thus, the CSS I want so badly is an impossibility, and not only the limitations of my hardware/software.

well thats a shame. im still trying to find the complete codeset to get everything working but in the meantime, it turns out the new file replacement code was ported to japanese wii's so start a new code file in NotePad or whatever you use and save it for later

Great, thanks Calvo! This should make custom stages and items work, no?
Did either of those CSS's work for you, by the way?

Calvo, I tried to make a .gct of this code, tried it with the mansion stage, and it froze again. I don't know what I did wrong. Perhaps I didn't convert the code properly?

Sounds great, but aren't you using a different version of the game than i am?
yeah, but what im going to do is find the NTSC versions of the codes you used and find fixes that way. when i get mine working, ill just find the Japanese version of the codes i used and send them to you. Don't take the download down btw, i havent been able to download it yet

So Calvo, I tested a couple of custom levels using Riivolution, including some of the ones that were originally giving me trouble, and they worked. The only problem is, the crash would still happen when I included the .rel files in the /ssbb folder, which I think may be the problem. Without the .rel, most worked great. But a lot of levels require the .rel to be functional, so there's a problem.

wait, which directory did you place the .rel files? you threw me off when you said "the .rel files in the /ssbb folder

I mean, when I tried to load the codes with Gecko OS, I put everything in the proper place. I put the .rel files in /module, and stages in /melee. Most of the stages didn't work (only one did, which only had a .pac file, so I decided to remove the .rel files from the others, but still didn't work).

So, I tried using Riivolution, wherein everything simply needs to be put into the /ssbb folder in the root of the SD. Again, the stages froze, but when I tried removing the .rel file, the ones that didn't work before started working.
It was an odd set of results, but this is what happened:

RED = Froze, along with high-pitched beeping
BLUE = Level was playable
GREEN = Nothing happened, the game just loaded the original level

Gecko OS test -

/melee/STGFINAL.pac + module/ST_FINAL.rel = FAIL | /melee/STGFINAL.pac only = WIN
/melee/STGNEWPORK.pac + module/ST_NEWPORK.rel = FAIL | /melee/STGNEWPORK.pac only = FAIL
STGMANSION.pac only = FAIL
STGKART.pac only = FAIL

Riivolution test -

/ssbb/STGFINAL.pac + /ssbb/ST_FINAL.rel = FAIL | /ssbb/STGFINAL.pac only = WIN
/ssbb/STGNEWPORK.pac + /ssbb/ST_NEWPORK.rel = FAIL | /ssbb/STGNEWPORK.pac only = FAIL
/ssbb/STGMANSION.pac only = WIN
/ssbb/STGKART.pac only = WIN

Now on the description of the STGNEWPORK.pac that I found, they said the ST_NEWPORK.rel was required to use the level, so when the custom level didn't load the second time, that was probably why. Thus, I concluded that .rel files don't agree with my version right now. But I don't understand why STGMANSION.pac and STGKART.pac won't work with Gecko OS, but work fine with Riivolution. Also, I discovered common3.pac also doesn't work with either GECKO OS or Riivolution. It makes my game freeze up at the strap screen.

Haha, ****it. Thanks for trying, I figured you might have forgotten. I've also been making some progress. I actually made ASF1nk's Flaming CSS work, complete with the bottom row of characters and all, but the CSS with Alloys still won't work, and Alloys are unselectable. The Common3.pac's still don't work, and .rel's still freeze the level select screen. :p

thats good :D

as for the CSS with alloys to work, you need the files to be able to select alloys. i havent been able to do that because ive never played with any character outside of regular play :(
