feel as if I'm at my limit as a marth player and I'm alright. I haven't been seeing a huge leap in my game and have not been getting better over the last few months. .I pretty much spend a whole leap of time on ' smashboards" checking any new marth thread tactics and immediately implementing them in my game
I watched all and i mean all of the matches ~ of ken Azen , cactuar , M2k , B-ryan , Neo .. ~ mostly every match match put on youtube and the hub..and study the matches and the find the unique styles of marth and add that to my overall game
And i should be a godly player but i feel like i am a amateur still .. I know this because on Friday i got beaten by
badly :(

I have rich knowledge of marth but i get *****

why ??? Has anyone else experienced this? I feel like picking up a new character.
I need to know what is wrong with me i have a tournie in 2 weeks ( smashGT)

then pick up a new char in friendlies, and try your best. in tourney you will probably play better with your main.

I play Marth. I'm far from good enough to compete against most tournament level people, but I'm not god awful (Sveet will say otherwise of course, he'll say that I AM)

Pick up a character like Falcon or Shiek for awhile, when you go back to Marth, you'll see that you're probably better. Secondaries HELP YOUR MAIN.

Also, mindgames. :)

IMO you should just keep playing only Marth seriously (that is in tournaments). You can get slightly good with other characters and try them against a Marth main to see what hurts and where, see how gay Marth really is. With this knowledge, you'd be able to perform well in other matchups. Cause I think that's your main hurdle at the moment.

Marth is hard to use effectively in tournies.

No amount of videos can prepare you for the real thing. It'll help sure, but it won't do anything for you in battle. Experience is so important when maining a character. you need to put time into just playing people and developing your style of play.

A lot of people know how to play their character, but they don't really know how to play the game.

You probably just have to get past that mental barrier.
this is exactly why i said play those secondaries. usually when you play them you get a better feel for what you are doing wrong (like not approaching smart or grabbing/shielding too much).

IMO you should just keep playing only Marth seriously (that is in tournaments). i disagree, see above.

Playing different and better players is the best way to improve your game. If all you do is play your friends sooner or later you will know what works against them and you will improve very slowly by trying your own new techniques. When you play better players you will learn what doesn't work and fast, and when you play different styles you learn how to change your style faster depending on what your playing.

It doesn't matter how much you know about Marth. You have to be used to playing against other characters and people. Someone could be decent without any in-depth knowledge of Marth if they just knew a bunch of matchups and were familiar with their local smash scene.

Yea man i was having that same problem about 2months ago..i didnt know how to get better or what to do to improve anymore, but what i end up doing is playing against people like nintendo dj and people and now im improving more than ever. Competition always helps, makes you smarter and wiser to the game. And oh yea mindgames is one thing you try and add to your game. Mindgames FTW >_>

No matter what you do, don't miss that tournament xP
Taking a beat in a tournament is awesome!
I have one next week too, and i started practing advanced techniques last week =P
It'll be my second competition in my life, and the first one using advanced techs. And guess what? I can't wait to have my *** kicked so i can improve my game :D
And don't give up! If your knowledge is fine, but your playing is not, you should always study your matches to see where you messed up =]

everyone has a hill they need to get over. it may seem like you're not getting better but keep at it.

playing other characters is fine, but you should really stick to your main for important tourney matches. especially since you've picked marth.

play as many people as you can throughout the week and play as many DIFFERENT people as you can. playing against just your region or just against your own group of friends does not help you improve. the way you improve is by adapting, and you adapt fastest when there are completely new playstyles and strategies being thrown at you.

EDIT: not that playing a lot against your own group of friends is bad. it's good to test out things like new characters, counter-pick stages, what moves out-prioritize others, etc. but your mindgames will not improve unless you're playing pc chris or something.

If you play better people often, you will get better. And only by playing people can you truely learn effective mindgames.
Also you should try playing diffirent characters, learn what makes 'em tick. If you know what they can do, you will know what to expect.

You can only prove that you've gotten good by ****** with Marth.

If you've gotten bored with playing him, try to play a Marth game based around gimps, those are always fun.

I can understand you beacause i had the same problem.
I always thought to be pro when i wasen't.
You have only to work hard to find your problem, even if it isn't clear.
Me, for exemple, i ever thought that i'm good at SHFFLing but watching carefully M2K, Ken, Azen & other pro players vids, i've understand that i'm not that fast.
Just fight against your friends, and don't do like i alwasy do: don't attack your enemy without a strategy. Try to make tricks or strats, i doesen't matter if you're not extremly fast like M2k, just don't be predictable.
And pratice, pratice, pratice, alone and with your friends.
I hope this will help you, and sorry for my very bad english.

Mastering anything takes time. You're not going to be constantly making huge leaps in skill. Most of the time you spend getting better will be on a kind of plateau - It'll feel like you're not improving at all and staying at the same level. Just keep practicing. Find things that you could be better at, and practice them. Then one day, you'll just explode into a new level of play and everything that you thought you'd been missing will click for you.

I've experienced this many times as I worked to get better. It's just a matter of patience.
