Breaking Bad Habits

I've noticed that I roll way too much than I need to because I get scared when my opponent puts pressure on me and I wanna get away. I know rolling isn't bad when used correctly but I know I over do it. Another thing I do is throw out fsmashes when desperate. So just wanna know how to deal with bad habits and how to break them then settle it in my gameplay.

The best way to break bad habits is to learn to play the game thoughtfully. Try playing the computer in which you consciously make some kind of decision for your actions. Think of your spacing versus your opponent, how your position will affect you and your opponents options, etc. It will delay you quite a bit at first, but soon it becomes second nature to process a few thoughts before you act on something. This helps tremendously when it comes to adapting against your opponent.

The best answer is to fight someone who punishes it. Just ask him to call you out on it whenever you do it.

Additionally as a Falco you can choose to use different panic buttons. (nair/dair instead of fsmash, shine instead of roll) Do not rely on them as panic buttons just note that these are a lot safer since punishing aerials/shine is harder than punishing smashes/rolls.

While on the topic on bad habits, does anyone know of a smart way to change the button you shield with? I shield with R, but I also wavedash with R, so it's harder than it should be to wavedash oos. Is there maybe a code that removes shielding functionality from the R button but retains the airdodge capabilities?

You will want it to retain the ability to shield. Many people use the L and R buttons for shielding under various circumstances, myself included. I often wavedash with L, but when I shield on the ground I use R so that I can wavedash out of shield easier.

Try just consciously shielding with L next time you play and do it until you start doing it naturally, that helped me out when I had the same problem.
