To make things easier...

If there's 23 now and they're be at least 25+ total, that leaves at least, uh, 2 newcomers left!

Seems like a press release.

But the over 25 thing worries me. That normally implies that it's under 30. If so, then we've had a fairly small improvement from Melee/lots of cuts.
I see what you mean, but it doesn't directly influence the amount of characters in the game.

It's simply implying that the game has more than 25 characters. Besides, i'm pretty sure that if Smash Bros. had a 14 character jump from SSB I don't think that there would just be 25-30 characters. I'm predicting around 35, which would actually keep me very satisfied.

No one's going to agree with me, but I feel like this may not be real. If i'm not mistaken (which I very well may be) the writing for the name is the same as in the japanese name for ssbm, which looks very suspect. also its all pictures we've seen before, which may or may not mean something. paint me partly skeptical.

EDIT: not to mention it shows two DEFINITELY unlockable characters on the box in snake and sonic, which doesn't make any sense whatsoever. they didn't do that in either of the other games so I don't see why they would on this one, especially in such a haphazard manner.

It would be stupid of them to include only 25 characters. They certainly know that people would be dissapointed... I assume there will be around 40 characters. I mean 22 have already been confirmed (I'm not counting Zamus) and I don't think they will announce unlockable characters except for Sonic and Snake and other third parties.

And shouldn't this be in the character discussion?

well no you see if they said over 30 or 35 people could use this estimate the final product. Saying over 25 just means "here you've been given 22 well there is even more characters" They probably just said 25 because it sounds better and more professional then 22.

25 could be just the starter number. They could have choosen not to mention how many unlockable characters there will be (to keep people suprised when they play it).

Yeah, that seems logical. They usually don't announce unlockables and why would they then announce how many characters is playable?

I have a feeling it's only counting starters... let's not forget how many characters were unlockable in melee...

considering they have already given s 23 characters and we are still 3months away from the game, I highly doubt they will only be keeping 2 characters a secret.

I don't think we can make any definitive predications about the final number except that fact it is over 25. I mean the American box for Melee said you could play on over 20 stages and the actual number was 29, nearly a third was left unsaid.

What it means is that they're ALLOWED to say 25. If they said 40, Sakurai would RUIN them. If the 3rd party characters are unlockable, that means we'll be getting four more characters, not including third party characters, before the release.

Paint me skeptical as well. If it is indeed the back cover of the Japanese box, which is likely because it has all the descriptive text, why is the Wii logo in the upper right corner.

Box layouts are the same logo wise on the international scale and it wouldn't be wise to put the logo over where you would normally have the controller styles for the game.

Check all your Wii game box covers at home. Upper right on the front has the Wii logo and that corner on the back usually shows what control scheme you use.

Although the lack of character updates has gotten me worried, I would have to agree. Their not going to give out hints about unlockable so saying over 25 does not mean that there will be only 30 however it doesn't say there will be over 30 either. I would imagine some popular characters are not going to get cut: Luigi, Ganondorf, Captain Falcon, Mewtwo, Jigglypuff, Marth, Falco. The Smash team would not be very wise in cutting popular characters from Melee and I don't see them doing it.

I LOVE the upper-left artwork! I'm dying to see more of it.

As for the character comment, I'm going to wager that they're only talking about the default roster. We know CF and Luigi are both returning, bringing our knowledge of characters up to a whopping *gasp* 25! I wouldn't let this worry you. Until the default roster is revealed in its entirety (notice that in the Handicap update, Sakurai still refuses to show us the character select screen--the default roster hasn't been fully revealed yet!), the numbers will go no higher than 25. We only have 23 characters revealed so far, so it's only natural that this press release (or so it seems) presents the smallest "nice" number available.

Segment of the elusive select screen:

EDIT: Notice how the formatting has changed on the character names since late June:

Also, check this video for a look at the demo select screen. Notice that the names are placed ABOVE the characters' portraits. Could it be, then, that the pixellated portion in the Samus screenshot is actually part of someone's portrait?

I hope 25 is the starter number, but I don't truly believe it will be. If it's not the starting number, then I estimate no more than 35 characters, unfortunately. That's based on the "20+ stages" on the back of the melee box. It also seems like whenever someone says "x+" when describing an amount, it's usually no more than x+10.

To me... that boxart just screams FAKE

I'm sure if you take a look at all Japanese Wii Game boxarts, you'll notice that the back of every boxart all contain one similarity. At the bottom of every back boxart, there is always a white area which contains all the legal information, barcode, Wii logo, and other important information.

(Example Japanese Boxarts:

Go to this webstie for a TON of Official Boxarts.
http://teambadattitude.co.uk/wii/0001.htm

Take a look at the Boxart featured here... Not a single legal information, barcode, wii logo, or even just anything similar. It's images and information from top to bottom, not to mention that the Wii header "swoosh" at the top of the image, is strangely found on the BACK of the Box, when it is usually found on the FRONT.

Alot of you were already skeptical on this boxart... I just hammered in the last nail in the coffin for it.

Indeed, I had my doubts about this box when I read it, and it looks like its been proven wrong. No need to keep this topic open any longer.
