Brawl Questions

I know that alot of people went wtf over the update that Zamus is currently
as of right now only seen to be unlockable through item use. A factor which
leads to question many tournament smashers including myself whether or not
she will be usable at all in the competitive scene.

We all know that speed was one of the primary guarantees in Melee where
characters like Fox, Falco, Marth, and Sheik were seen as high tiers where a
few exceptions, like Peach and others like Ganandorf (yes, I said Ganandorf...
his SHFFL was an advantage and a downright beatdown in the cases that I
have seen to pros when played against other top tiers whose players were not
so pro like...)

And we also know that being slow was one of the primary guarantees in Melee
where a character was generally ****. I mean who used Bowser, DK, or Pichu
(He or she...was not that slow compared to the others but **** nonetheless.)

Now, just try to imagine this, what if Brawl was a way to try to correct this? Like a
Nintendo representative said in the E3 press conference about Mariokart Wii, the
gameplay will change so that even new comers can compete with veterans. If you
somehow doubt my claim, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PfJ5j094Pk
0:50 to 1:41.

Nintendo has always been about having fun and balance and I do believe that Melee,
even though it was intended to be fun, was NOT trying to be a huge competitive
game like Marvel v Capcom 2 and all the techs we come to know and love were not
intended by the developers to be used.

I doubt that now Masahiro Sakurai has seen Melee for its end result where
characters were not being used at all he will try and incorparate Brawl for the
same result. I do believe that he will make mistakes here or there and hopefully
they will be abused to become new techs or that he will still decide to leave some
in. Even though I truly enjoyed Melee for the tournaments I went and the fun I had,
there is indeed a HUGE possibility that Brawl is not going to have SHFFL or all those
other techs that made Melee the competitive game we come to know and love.

I mean face it, if Melee did not have SHFFL or Wavedashing (Where Fox's combos
like waveshine and drillshine would have been non-existant) would Melee have been
the game it is today? I, for one, do not think so.

If Melee was just another Super Smash Bros. but with no techs and better
graphics, I believe that Melee would have just been a fun fighting game where
people would play for months and then go on to better things.
(I know I still played Melee for a year and a half where I sucked horribly and was
about to trade the game into Gamestop until my friend showed me Fox's waveshine
and thats where I saw Melee could be a bit more intresting if I learned how to do
those neat techs and learned to suck less.)

So if Brawl truly is a correction of Melee where characters like Pichu, yes...Pichu,
actually stood a chance against Bombsoldier's Falco or Ken's Marth...yes, a very
lol parrallel universe indeed. Would it have the same success as Melee?

Now I know this is a long post so bare with me.

People have been doing alot of complaining where if there is no online play, Brawl
would never compete against games like Halo 3 or they would just not buy the
game period.

So is online play the real big factor in determining Brawl's success?

Here is my last two questions to all of you:

If Brawl had no online play but still held enough techs where it was still competitive
worthy, would it be successful?

or

If Brawl had online play but the techs, if any, were still **** enough where it was a
dissappointment to the competitive lovers of Melee, would it then be the same
success as Melee?

And by the same success as Melee, I generally mean that the game is
competitive enough where there will be tournaments held even five no maybe
six years after its release and there is some website for it where they show
upcoming tournaments and have tech discussions about the individual characters
for it.

-Thank you for your time.

For one, good first post. And second I agree that Smash wasn't meant to have techs and Wavedashing, SHFFLS, and stuff like that. It was meant to be a fun game only using smash attacks, specials attacks, and standard attacks. But i'm sure Sakurai will somehow please Zamus and Samus fans by many reasons. One doing a sheik transform thing by pressing a at the beginning of the match, still making Zamus a seperate character, or have Zamus's FS transform back into Samus. But today's update gave us more questions than it answered.

I think that no matter what the online play situation turns out to be the game will be a HUGE success look at Melee and the first game no online and people still play the games consistantly today, so with or without i know brawl will easily be the best yet. and i really wish people would stop complaining about zero samus shes fine!!!!! its not like regular samus sucks or anything

First, if Brawl is online, it will be competitive, even if it easier and has less techs than Smash64. To this, I have no doubt. The reason is that online is inherently competitive, or for those who don't understand big words; By definition, online play is competitive.

Second, if Brawl is offline, it will still be competitive whether it has techs or not, but for a different reason than the online one. It will still be competitive because Melee was competitive, and it is progress and the newest version, and the general consensus will be to move on to the next version for tournaments and the like, even if people do or do not like Brawl.

So, YES to answer all your questions.

Without techs such as the SHFFL or the Waveshine, heavy/slow characters like Bower, DK, and Ganon wouldn't stand a chance against a top tier character. Sure Sakurai would LOVE to make the game so thought new comers could hold their ground with seasoned veterans, but is that really fair to us (well, some of us) veterans? I'm sure Sakurai has already given that question a thought and has decided not to make the game TOO easy.
I'm sure there will be techs like the L Cancel because it was a glitch in the 64, and he made it an actual tech in Melee along with the short hop, and I doubt he would remove something so amazing from a game that has a reputation to be so amazing.
Imo, as long as the SSFFL remains in Brawl, I could care less about the Wavedash.

This game has so much hype I don't think anything could kill it even for 5-6 years unless another smash brothers comes out in that time frame.

Sometimes I think Brawl is OVERhyped. I mean, people even go orgasmic over the music updates. I mean, come on, the only songs I really liked were SSBM: Menu 1 and Star Fox: Space Armada. Now those were good.

Thanks to the posters who responded since I only expected two or three posts to
this topic.

I do think that it is only natural that a game such as this is getting the hype it is
now seeing since I think we all can agree that it truly deserves it.

However, I do hope that this does not turn into a situation that Zelda TP faced
after initial release since I have read that some people were expecting a more
revolutionary aspect of the genre but were dissappointed overall when all of
their expectations were not met due to the game being overhyped to be the god
of the zelda series.

I mean when the new zelda game was speculated and first announced at a E3, or
other conference, and a trailer was shown, I read that the fans were overjoyed
and I do recall seeing somewhere that some actually wept at its anticipation.

But when the game was finally announced what were its reviews? A 8-8.9 was
the most it ever recieved and some of my friends, including me, was quite surprised
that most called a somewhat shinier OoT and it never truly lived up to its hype.

Will Brawl live up to the hype? I do hope so, but regardless of any review I will buy
it and see for myself. Zelda TP may not have been that 9.5-10 that people were
hoping for but I still greatly enjoyed it nonetheless.
