Brawl Picks #5: Mach Rider vs Takamaru

Err... Yeah. I'm kinda late in setting this poll up. That d*** life of mine was getting in the way. Anyway, I decided to mix it up a bit and pit two retro characters against one another: Mach Rider vs Takamaru.

Sakurai has stated that he didn't want to add only new or popular characters solely and that he also enjoys the older days of gaming. From this we can gather that we'll see a few retro characters make an appearence in Brawl. Two of those most popular choices are the two on our poll today.




Name: Mach Rider
Series: Mach Rider Series
Party: First Party
Role: Protaganist
Details: Mach Rider was going to appear in Melee but was removed from the final roster. Even so his music and trophy remained. Now that Brawl is in the works, it goes without saying that Mach Rider has a high chance at making the final roster. After all, Pit was intended to be in Melee but was removed because of the complexity of designing his wings to fit. Like Captain Falcon, he would probably have a moveset made from scratch.




Name: Takamaru
Series: Nazo no Murasaemjou Series
Party: First Party
Role: Protaganist
Details: Though it is true that Sakurai doesn't want to overflow Brawl with Japan Only characters, he never ruled them out altogether. Takamaru appeared on Sakurai's poll, so Sakurai is, at the very least, thinking about him. He could be Brawl's token Japan Only retro character and samurai. I don't really know much about this character, though I wouldn't mind seeing him in, so you Takamaru supporters can feel free to explain your reasonings behind his inclusion.

For this poll I feel pretty split. Mach Rider and Takamaru would both make excellent additions to Brawl and I honestly don't know who to vote for. I'll leave it up to you guys to convince me who to side with. :p

Mach Rider. Three good reasons(And one not so good one).

1. A not well known, but not unknown characters.
2. Unique moveset
3. Takamaru, from what I've seen, is just another swordsman. Unless he has some powers or something(I never played Nazo no Murasame-jō, so I wouldn't know).
4. He could provide a "rival" to Captain Falcon.

But Takamaru has one thing going for him, first Nintendo Samurai protanginist. RETRO SAMURAI FTW!

I know absolute zip about these two characters, but if you say that Mach Rider was going to be in Melee, well I'll believe you and vote for him for Brawl.

I like both characters, but while Takamaru is Nintendo's own samurai (Goroh's a racer first and foremost), I think his Japanese exclusivity is a huge obstacle for him. That and it appears Sakurai at least considered Mach Rider for melee, so I'm sure he has some interesting ideas for him.

I'd like to see Takamaru but we'll have too many sword characters. I pick Mach Rider.

I'm afraid once again, my favorite is losing (so far i chose the losing one with Vaati, Deoxys, and now Takamaru.) I did pick Bowser Jr, and Lyn though.

Hey, next poll should be Geno VS Megaman! Who will accompany Sonic and Snake?

takimaru sounds cooler, more original and obviously, gonna be cool to be in brawl. I dont see the point of having Machrider and capt falcon, and driving games really shouldn't be in brawl anyways.

They´ve both got they´re good an bad aspects. Takamaru is a classically popular retro character who could instigate a revival of his franchise if he showed up in Brawl. Nevertheless, his primary weapon is a sword, of which we already have many. On the other hand, Mach Rider is little-known character also from a retro series that could easily be brought back from the Wii, but he also loses originality points as the possibilities of him ending up as a Captain Falcon imitation are considerable. Either of the two have potential for great characters, but are also teetering on the edge of unoriginality.

I guess I´ll go with Takamaru, however, because he has more popular support (in Japan) and if there is any chance that his appearance in SSBB will cause a return of the Mystery of Castle Murasame franchise then I´m all for it.

Yeah, I really don´t see them implementing his motorcycle. Can you even imagine how that might work?

We have too many sword weilders in Melee, and Brawl as it is.
I had to choose Mach Rider, but I personally don't know much between the two.

it should have been mach rider vs balloon fighter
but rider gets my vote, a futuristic motorcyclist (with machine guns) is cooler than a samurai.

Nice picks. Well, I have to go with Mach Rider for a few reasons.

1. I do not want the game cluttered with sword users. This is just personal preference.

2. Mach Rider offers a rivalry to Captain Falcon and at the same time represents a new franchise (Samurai Goroh cannot do both of these).

3. Mach Rider can offer a highly unique style of play if he brings his motercyle to battle. Imagine wall jumping with a bike. Hot. Another option is for his suit to have the ability to morph into a motorcyle for when he runs (like having tires jutting from his forearms, and calves). Weird, but possibly very cool and at the very least flavorful.

I went with him because of what I saw, here and in Melee.

Oh, and by the way, Pit was supposed to be also in SSB64, but was replaced with Jigglypuff because "they figured it would be more marketable".
heh, yeah right. Jiggs is the ****' favorite pokemon, that's why she got in in the first place.

the Samurai dude (i dont really care what his name is..) is widely unknown to the rest of the world. He is a Japan-popular character. However this doesnt hold him back (do u remember a guy named......Marth?).
Yet, the Motocycle guy (<--not caring again) would bring a unique moveset to Brawl- the use of a vehicle. No other character has that and would be fun to play (if the Brawl cast can make it work).

---Speakin of missing elements in Brawl here are some other things to consider that havent been used in SSB yet:

Bugs- sounds stupid but it would add variety to the cast. No ideas here...

Robots- Megaman is the most likely so far. Ray 01 is next in line.

Quadropeds- No four-legged fighters as of yet. Minda & Wolf Link duo just might change this.

These are just some thoughts. Any other ideas?---


Back on subject. I picked the Moto dude for the impliment of a vehicle.
