Is anyone else feeling slightly... underwhelmed by the level selections viewable thus far on the official SSBB website?

They're beautiful... I mean, the backgrounds are nothing short of gorgeous, but... for the most part they seem rather small and overly simplistic. As far as I can tell they're all just one level surface that may or may not have two or three smaller platforms slightly elevated a la SSBM Battlefield.

On the plus side, it looks like most if not all of the stages are going to be tourney-friendly, but we all know there's more to this game than just the straightforward play-to-win style of tournaments. Is there anyone who didn't enjoy a casual match with friends on Hyrule Temple? Isn't there always some guy at your get-togethers who picks Pokefloats just for amusement of hearing everyone else in the room groan and curse?

This Smasher is really hoping to see some larger and more complex stages introduced in the near future.

well weve already seen a few that could be like this in trailers that arent 'offically' announced yet, being the FE stages (both inside the castle and outside on the castle wall), as well as the mario kart stage (there seems to be quite a bit of platforms off the road, that you can see mario run on in the second trailer). then there's the halberd stage, where you fight both inside and out on the platform, and then the mute city-ish delfino stage. i wouldnt be too worried about the stages right now. especially considering theres probably less than 10 known stages as of right now, while there were almost 30 in melee, theyve still got quite a few to mess around with.

I'm personally satisfied with all of the levels thus far. Bridge of Eldin looks LOOOOONG, not to mention the fact that its middle section is constantly disappearing and reappearing in a neverending cycle. I'm sure there will be some gigantic and more "exciting" stages, but I am currently quite happy with our selection.

You never know what's to come, maybe Sakurai wants a good balance of simple and CRazY stages.

I have a feeling the WarioWare stages will be the craziest

I'm very happy with the stage selection so far, and I'm expecting a very large (and hopefully just as varied) selection of stages. I want it all: tourney-friendly stages, stages with movable/destructible/disappearing platforms, scrolling stages, stages with tons of hazards, and a decent selection of retro stages (return of the POW block and usable warp pipes PLEASE).

Also, I like how so far just about every stage has a dynamic, changing background. Battlefield goes from day to night. Smashville does as well, but in real time. Yoshi's stage goes through the seasons. The Star Fox stage isn't confined to one location any more. Delfino gives you a view of the city from many vantage points... I just love it all so far.

Yes, so far the stages look great and are nicely developed. Only more great stages to come, I expect some WTF stages since they always like to have some stages which are totally unbalanced but fun and confusing in party play.

Looks like they want to throw in a bunch of cameos and easter eggs for us to find.

I felt exactly the same as you did. Then again, it's not all completed yet, just like how Hyrule was changed so late in the game that in the movie it's actually different. (in SSBM)

What about the leves that are confirmed but not shown on the sites as updates?

Mario circut, The castle level, solid snakes level, the halberd (SP?)

Just because what has been shown thus far are what your consider "tourny levels" doesn't mean we know enough about the levels. There could be hidden elements not even discussed.

Besides, these arn't all of the levels in the game. My guess is that this is just the tip of the iceberge. After all, they can't release EVERYTHING. :p

I'm considering all level designs as pending, as far as screens we've seen.

But I'll agree. We need more than 80% of the stages being flat planes.

Here's hopin'.

I really REALLY don't understand why people don't like the new stages sometimes. If you look at Melee, there are like 5 battlefield clones. And all of those are on random select, meaning we play on them most. The new stages we've seen for Melee are great. I don't care about 300 square mile stages that are totally unbalanced and you can camp forever on. But look at the new platform layouts. The only one so far that has copied Battlefield is the New Battlefield.

And in addition to great new platform layouts, now many stages have dynamic backgrounds.

If you think about it, they may seem underwhelming to you now, but what about when you're playing the game? A lot of the commonly played Melee stages would seem downright BORING to look at, but playing on them, you don't really feel that way.

And the Brawl stages we have seen so far look SOOOO much better than those old Melee stages we play all the time.

So just wait until you have the game to sart complaining please.

We've still got a long way to go stage wise. I'm sure he's showing us the basic stages because that's what we wanted more tournament stages. But me personally am waiting for a Hyrule Temple stage which I would always play on for fun.

I've been very disappointed with the stages as well. Half of them are exactly the same (large single platform floating above the stage), two have no downward knockouts (Well...not all the time, at least), and the last one is just the token three-platform stage which I never liked. I like big open stages that give you room to move and jump around. Dreamland 64 is probably my all-time favorite stage because of this, along with Final Destination.

Luckily, we have a LOT more stages to go, if Melee is any indication. And Halberd looked like it might be a fun one (it doesn't seem to keep the one-platform shape the whole time).

EDIT: Actually, I just went back and noticed that Lylat Cruise is three small platforms, not one big one. Which isn't quite as bad, I suppose.

They are showing off some of the more balanced stages imo.. Not sure if the small changes in the stages will make it banned since I have never played competitivly and can't notice what it would actually affect in terms of moves.

Stages, ideas, features look great so far.. As I have said before... I wonder what everyones favorite unbalanced stage will be this time around^^

The stages look great so far. It seems that the whole "balance in mind" didn't wear off, but I think they're still going to make wacky stages that'll be fun, too. Besides, from what they're showing right now, it's only icing on the cake.

There do seem to be a lot of platform taxi (can I coin a term?) stages, such as Smashville, the Mario Kart stage, the Mario Sunshine stage, and the Starfox stage, but there are some decent ones as well, like The Bridge of Eldin, the Yoshi stage, the Kid Icarus stage, and the Fire Emblem stage. Of course, Battlefield is the necessary three platforms stage.

In my opinion, the stages we have right now are just great. Battlefield and BoE are my personal favourites. Now I see that you're worrying that all the stages are kind of similar and bland (putting the awesome backgrounds to side), and also small. These are only a FEW of the 50 or so stages Sakurai will give us. Sakurai is a genius, and is working with hardcore smashers, so just keep your chin up, I'm sure some stages will be big enough and to your liking.

Heh, when I was working at the video store, we had a Melee tournament and in the hour before the tournament, one of my co-workers turned the volume up on the Tv's and let it play the DK Rap until it was time to start. It was ridiculous

Do we really have 50 stages if so many of them are so similiar though? Honestly, I'd rather have half that number if they're all more dynamic and unique than 50 stages with more clones than SSBM's character roster.

I understand that there's still plenty of time for improvement before we're handed a finished product as well as the fact that there's probably going to be just as much if not more to discover and unlock than what we're initially shown, but as of right now, from the stages that are confirmed and viewable on the official site, I am still really underwhelmed.

Dude, same here. Delfino Plaza looks sweet and seems like a great stage to play on.

Levels that I'm looking most forward to, are: (unconfirmed ones)

1. Snake's Level

2. Samus's Level

3. Wario's Level

I guess I can't forget the Fire Emblem level either XD That looks like it should be pretty good

I actually like the levels so far. I'm looking forward to Delfino Plaza the mostright now. It seems to be the one the feels most alive, the most vibrant (in look and color). It seems like a fresh new thing, and yet most of us know what it is, and recognize it. I dunno, all I know is that it seems like it will be very enjoyable XD The many locations you go to should change the battlefield, as well (not just three platforms and one big one)
