I strongly believe that Dark Pit will be a boss on Palutena's Temple. I posted this on r/smashbros but it was largely ignored, and I would like to hear some counter arguments. There are two pieces of circumstantial evidence, and one piece of hard evidence that suggests this to be the case.

First, Dark Pit's colors/ costume was not seen in any of the demos, despite it being featured in Brawl.

Secondly, Dark Pit was featured at the end Palutena's reveal trailer as 'always crashing her party'. While Chrom's role in Sm4sh was clearly explained after his was shown, Dark Pit's role still remains a mystery. I don't think Sakurai would show off another character just for a trailer, he's always had some purpose for their inclusion.

Lastly, in the Super Smash Brothers direct, there was a short clip of ZSS in Palutena's Temple with the text "残りHP". In English this means how much HP is left. Since Smash counts up for HP, this does not make any sense for the regular fighters. However, boss characters have a set amount of health. For video proof, check out Gamexplain's analysis of the Smash Direct (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dzSeICAwZA#t=841) exactly 14 minutes into it. However, this could simply mean that there will be a Boss character on the stage, and not necessarily Dark Pit. After all it is a huge stage, and Kid Icarus has a lot of boss characters that they could draw from.

If I recall correctly, Palutena's temple was also not playable at E3, just like Pyrosphere (which we know has some form as Ridley as a boss). So, Sakurai and co could be trying to hide all the bosses for a bigger (pun intended) reveal later, most likely after the 3DS version is released, and to hype the Wii U version.

They should make it when you select the dark pit color as pit, Alfonzo becomes the boss in Palutena's temple

When Pit decides to cosplay himself as a goth, Alfonzo becomes the boss in Palutena's temple.

Alfonzo: Leave it to me!

The HP could also be for a damagable stage object if it's really just an accident from the debug menu. Things like the statues in Castle Siege, the platforms in Skyworld, that section of the floor in New Pork City, and the pillars on Luigi's Mansion have HP just as much as boss enemies do. It seems very likely that at least one such object will be on Palutena's Temple.

Dark Pit will obviously have a role in the game. My personal speculation is that he'll be a Pit clone similar to how Lucina is a Marth clone; Sakurai did kinda imply that there would be more, and who is a more logical clone than Dark Pit as Pit. The color issue for costumes isn't really a big deal either; you just make sure Pit always has light colored wings and Dark Pit always had dark colored wings while using their clothes to be the biggest point of color distinction. Now, we'll have to wait and see exactly what happens, but that's just what seems most likely to me.

While on this topic, this happy little rumor popped up today:

http://ssb4dojo.com/post/91872148766/rumor-mill-4chan-12

Quoting myself from another thread:

But, in a weird way, it explains a lot of things:

-Why Palutena's Temple, Mario Galaxy, and Pyrosphere were not playable at E3.
-Why Dark Pit was in Palutena's trailer but didn't have a title splash card.
-Why a DK and Kirby stage haven't been shown for either version yet.
-Why Sakurai has been irritatingly vague with Ridley for nearly a year now.
-Why Ridley's movements were so weird in the Smash Direct and why they only showed his shadow.
-Why no new villain characters have been shown yet.
-Why Sakurai made it a point to point out that bosses were a special feature this time around.

This also makes me think that, if this is true, the bosses will be limited to their own stages and that the option is only available in a special mode. We already know that Amiibos use the Gamepad so what Sakurai said wasn't entirely true either. I might be spinning a conspiracy theory here but I'll be very interested to see what comes up in the next couple of months.

I've always toyed with the idea of an absolutely gargantuan Hades appearing and obliterating half the stage. Afterward, I envisioned him taking its place, and raining down attacks on the other side. After enough damage he'd laugh and disappear or something similar.

I'm kind of hoping for something like this just because of how stupidly huge the stage is. Hyrule Temple and New Pork City were so boring that it makes me wish they had more hazards.

Something about the original games is that you explore the level and find secrets, there are also some jerks like zeus who like to test you for a while.

What im saying is that palutenas temple could play like a tiny version of smash run, and instead of bosses i would love random enemies and hazards over the place (maybe mid bosses :p).

Here some sprites:
<- not a metroid
