I'm pretty disappointed with everyone who was speaking ill of me during this whole issue with the chain grab. Despite my descision to switch mains, I was still fighting harder than a lot of you to impose a ban. However, thanks to some more research done by others, it turns out that Lucas is a lot better off than poor Ness, only being able to be infinite grabbed by Marth and Pokemon Trainer.

Even then, we will still be at a competitive disadvantage due to certain characters being able to string KO moves from grabs. But since the threat of so many infinites are gone, now we truly WILL be able to use it to our advantage.

All it means is that Lucas players will need to establish more trust in their secondaries. If you haven't considered a bodyguard for your Lucas, I suggest you think about it if you want to have an easier time competitively.

It all comes down to who you fear the most: Marth, Pokemon Trainer, or some other character with next to infinite grabs and a strong KO move (like Snake.)

My personal recommendation is Lucario. Due to his range and excellent hitboxes, he is one of the best match-ups against Marth, and can compete with the swordsman on an equal level. He even has a few advantages against Marth, including disjointed hitboxes which linger, as apposed to Marth's single quick hits, and the ability to gimp Marth with ease.

His playing style also has a resemblance to Lucas, and he has similar air control. He doesn't have too much trouble dealing with Pokemon trainer either.

Lucario can gain grab Snake up to 60-70% at the start of a stock with his force palm, providing he's under 50% himself. He also has the hitboxes to deal with Snake, and double team as well as the range of his Fsmash can keep him and his shield safe from grenades. He doesn't fail against PT either.

Anyone else care to make suggestions for good counter-picks to support a competitive Lucas?

Ness is only CG grabbed PK trainer and Marth, Lucas is only CG by Marth, so be sure to add Ness in there!

Ness and Lucas bodyguards would be...

I suggest DK. Difficult for Marth to KO, can KO fast, and his Bair stops Marth's recovery.

My Lucas has three Bodyguards

Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard.

I mean, let's be honest, the Pokemon are one giant counterpick.

right now the only character I really play other than Lucas is Pikachu, and now I'm thinking about Lucario. I also have a small amount of experience with G&W but I dislike his lack of a significant pressuring projectile.

Nessbounder, I hope you don't think I was ever speaking ill of you. I don't believe I said anything more than the data was wrong, but if I offended you, sorry.

Also, I'm not seeing tournament viability unless you request a round 1 double blind and pick lucas, then don't use him again in the set.

No, not you. I was quite pleased my data was wrong, actually. I'm talking about the people who kept calling me a "traitor" and whatever.

Anyway, as far as tournament viability goes, yes you could do a double blind pick as Ness or Lucas OR you could lead with your 'secondary' instead. If you win the first round, your opponent will probably not pick Marth if you use a character who has better than average match ups against him. That way, if you lose the second round, you can counter pick Ness or Lucas for the final round without having to worry about Marth.

If the opponent is a Marth main, you can just avoid using Ness or Lucas for that entire fight.

What I'm trying to say is that if anyone wants to use Ness and Lucas seriously in tournaments, they're going to have to learn to use a secondary main as a cover, and get just as good with that character as they are with the PK boys.

Yeah. And if you go in saying "I'm a Ness/Lucas player" you can probably expect to encounter a lot more Marths in a double-blind situation. XD

So the trick is to get good with a character who can challenge Marth on equal ground, and get good at beating him.

I was playing around with Lucario a little and hes alright ... idk

Who else would be good choice to counter-pick Marth?

(MK, Pit or Zelda? Keep in mind mastering Snake will take like all summer)

And who would be a good choice against a Toon Link?

My Lucas matches up ok but those dang arrows and boomerang do me in.

Lucario may seem "just OK" at first glance, but he just takes a special playing style before you realize he's incredibly effective.

I suppose people say that Metaknight is good for Marth, but I'm not sure.

As for Toon Link, start learning how to stickball his projectiles back at him. It works wonders for me. XD

NessB do you B-Stick with Lucario as well?

I tried it but it seemed really inefficient compared to Lucas.

He's right. I played against a reeeeeaaaaally good Lucario the other day with my Lucas, and his lingering disjointed hitboxes just throw you for a loop when you first encounter them.

Lucario is an interesting dude, but I'm concerned that his shoddy recovery makes him fish bait against a few characters :x Decent against Marth though.

His recovery is one of his weaker points it's true, but it's not so bad once you learn how to ledge stick and mainly stay on stages like Final Destination and Yoshi's Island.

And Shibby, I don't B-stick with Lucario. It's not all that useful really. I do sometimes use B-sticked force palms without the b stick, but even then, you don't need it like you need Lucas's.
