Technically it is because Back in the old days you could get candy for a penny but now you can't as the price increases caused the penny to be worthless nowadays. If anything the more appropriate term would be no longer fit for the new price increases which would fall under "outdated"

Ball and chain? I never used that...but anyway, have you ever tried to look for Rupees inside a satchel filled with bombs, arrows, a boomerang and a Longshot?
