I find that lag was a lot worse in Brawl, and more frequent as well. Though the 3DS version seems to suffer it pretty badly too.

I've mastered the timing in dd, wii and 8.
Though, it is by far the hardest in dd.
The mini turbo's timing is so precise...
In mkwii the window is pretty large, but the timing is weird. In mk8 you only have a few frames, but it's not too hard.

I'm pretty sure snaking was unintentional and Nintendo probably wanted to make the game more 'balanced' for everyone. Snaking was really crazy fun though.
