There were 3 generations. None of them were as popular as Generation 4, FIM. 2 & 3 especially were much more feminine as well.

There were three previous gens of MLP. The second and third were pretty poorly made and mostly existed to promote the merchandise and were far more feminine, so no males could ever enjoy that. But the first one was actually a creative and genuine cartoon. Kind of like that of today's.

I don't know much either. It definitely had some dark villains though, some of which are in the current gen as well, but they were even more nasty in the first gen than they are in this one.
