How did the freeze glitch happen anyway? I was like a mile away during the squall.....

The freeze glitch works independently of your position relative to your opponent. A fun of way of testing this is to have Nana grab the opponent near an edge, have Popo jump or run away from Nana, and then side-B at the right time; you'll be nowhere near the opponent, but s/he will get frozen anyways.
