Funny, I had the same idea for this thread. I'd say either Mario, Luigi, Mega, Ike, or Jigglypuff.

I would say Shulk's because...

  1. it can be MArt cancelled which means it can virtually have no landing lag
  2. farthest reaching bair in the game
  3. can break through projectiles
  4. can do a nasty 17% in buster
  5. a solid KO move, especially in smash
  6. Looks cool B)

I'd say it's too slow to actually KO reliably with it.

In terms of effort:reward ratio I'd go with :4mario:. I can literally keep my space from my opponent with SH (RAR) Bairs alongside Fireballs and be able to make them react and just go from the punish. It also comes out rather quick and is a very useful edgeguarding or killing tool depending on opponent placement and percentage.

It depends on preference. For me, it's :4palutena:

1: Fair KO power and does 12% damage. Not the best, but it's manageable. It is one of her KO moves if it helps.
2: Decently fast, and doesn't have much landing lag. Short Hops can be performed to prevent landing lag.
3: Grants Palutena small invincibility. You can even destroy a Blast Box and take no damage at all. ♥
4: Capability of neutralizing relatively any projectile (except multi-hit ones iirc, like Smart Bombs), ♥
5: The move cannot be beaten in priority. It will either clash with a move or beat it. ♥

Gotta love its priority. and such. <3 Many may prefer fast and spammable, but I prefer a good defensive one with special properties, let alone its ability to take out even the strongest projectiles and challenge strong attacks.

My nomination would have to go to Shulk. It has crazy reach on it (farthest horizontal reach of any Bair in the game) and can be used as a good KO move. One of my other friends here on SB, Ze Dewott, mains Shulk, so I can speak from a bit of experience. R.O.B.'s Bair also has really good KO power behind it and can be used to assist horizontal recovery, though it's laggy and super hard to land on mobile fighters.

It's slow start up time is perfect for punishing spot dodges/rolls and It is by far my most reliable and consistent kill move that I use with Shulk!

I'd say :4myfriends:. Frame 7, large disjoint, kills early, does 14%, autocancels from a shorthop. Customs make it even better, as they improve his recovery enough to let him go deep to edgeguard with it.

Honorable mentions: :4dk: :4drmario: :4metaknight:

EDIT: didn't realize doc's was this good lol, not sure that he's the best but he's definitely up there

:4mario: and :4myfriends:, the latter especially due to the following:

1. Fast start-up and good range, considering how powerful it is.
2. Very effective with RAR.
3. Can auto-cancel on short hop.
4. Can combo from other attacks (i.e. N-air, D-throw).

^-^

I actually do think Doc's might be the best. It's pretty solid in most every area. DK, Ike, Ganon, and Megaman all are good choices too.

Everything Falco has is decent or mediocre, but his back air is the best imo. It's instant, lagless, powerful, and rangey. Accompanied by his air speed and height, I think his is the best.

Honestly when I play against shulks this is one of his most obvious and slow attacks. Plus it DOES have langing lag, a decent amount. I think jigglypuff has an amazing back air, also since landing lag isn't really an issue for her since she can just keep jumping. Bowser has a really powerful one that starts really early after input. Marth/Lucina have great b-airs for edge guarding. Plus, i'm trying not to be biased, but Captain falcons back air starts almost instantly and has virtually has no landing lag, plus it's a decent killing move and an OK edge guard. (CFal lacks edge guarding options, so i wonder if it just seems like a good edge guard because he doesn't have much else.)

Because it's slower than all the others.
I think Dedede is worth a mention, too, because his has the strength to compensate for the slowness.
Ganon's is stronger and comes out much faster. It doesn't have the huge, disjointed hitbox, but it's overall better due to its speed and power.

Actually, I believe Dedede's is stronger. Not to mention it can be comboed into easier. But I almost forgot about Jigglypuff. It kills reliably, and it's a Wall of Pain, something that no one else has, not even Mario.
Edit: Turns out you were right. Ganondorf's back air KOs 6% earlier than Dedede's. Though, Dedede's can still be comboed into easier, and it outranges Ganondorf's by a wide margin.

It can't be comboed into at kill %s, and it's a full 7 frames slower on startup. That's pretty significant. It's a good move but 17 frame startup is an issue.

I like the Mario Bros. back air's, but I have to give the best back air to Sheik or villager.

Not to mention how fast it comes out for Ike. The speed of it can easily catch people off guard. I find it's extremely hard to try to block reflexively. I think the only disadvantage to is it that it's range could be better, but hitting tall people from a short hop for the KO seems to trump that.

That and I love using it against deep recoveries. That stage meteor effect!

So you're saying because it's slow that automatically rules it out? Ganondorf's back air takes precision to land on a grounded opponent, and considering the range on it, hitting it in the air is still an issue. You'd be surprised at how that large hammer catches people off guard.
That said, neither one of them is a candidate for BEST back air. My vote goes to Mario and Jigglypuff, if two are allowed.

I never said Shulk's bair doesn't have landing lag-if you monado art cancel his bair it has no landing lag. CFalcs bair is insaneeeee it starts up quick and kills pretty early and is super safe on shield too.

Kirby: Comes out fast and has awesome kill power, not much landing lag.

Meta Knight: Catch someone off stage, kills at 90%. Fast, reliable, and more.

Jigglypuff: Fast, good kill power.

The good Doctor and Ike have ridiculously good bairs and with that super fast startup I'd give the edge go Ike.

Forget what I said about Mario, I just got THE best edgeguard ever with Luigi. Luigi's back air for all the money. Go Luigi. Luigi #1. I am a believer.
