If I remember correctly, he got the idea for Pikmin from gardening.

Yeah, he doesn't actually direct very much (or at all) anymore, but serves as producer and gets heavily involved in a lot of Nintendo properties.
Although a minor point, he also started the Yoshi sub-franchise. Which is of note because its really the only one of the Mario sub-franchises he personally created and directed. Non-English players should know that this game is NOT Mario World 2 - that was added to the English title. Its simply Yoshi's Island in Japan and has always been a spin-off series.
Characters like Wario and their branching adventures were created by other people and added into the universe (I believe Wario was Gunpei - probably getting his name wrong here. Go ahead and correct me, I'm feeling too lazy to look it up).
