i am thinking of doing a guide on this website going over basic behavioral psychology and behavior modification techniques. there are many places online you can find this info but i think a guide would be useful to many players who would not look for this info. i have read many guides on this website pertaining to the right mind set ect, but i dont see any on reinforcement and extinction techniques to deal with problem behaviors(which seem to be rampant with focus on new tech, matchups ect) this post is merely me testing the market to see if the guide would be a useful addition to the collection of knowledge. please let me know if this would be useful and ill get right to it;)
PP, I think the fact you had to ask for that means i should;). thank you for asking(I guess your for the idea then?)
The guide would focus on techniques to strengthen behavior and how to eliminate problem behavior(example:shield grabbing every time)
im working on it, gonna try to simplify most of the language and provide lots of examples

yeah.

though, if i were to write this, i would write about how people could do more to analyze what they're doing by encouraging them to stop and think about what they're doing and why they're doing it and then come up with alternative moves for each trouble situation they come across in their gameplay, explaining why and how this will work to help them

which might require a little more motivation on getting people to actually stop and plan out what they're doing than just explaining how reinforcement works, but that's dependent on the individual

also you're right, discussion tends to be pretty 'cognitive' about this game, perhaps in part because of the age-old and so-called 'mindgames vs tech skill' discussion that usually ends up ruling out just rote, and focuses more on the - as you accurately said - mindset of play.

that said, melee is a pretty friendly game, and one could just as well do a behavioral reinforcement and modification approach as they could a more 'social-learning' type approach (so to speak) which encourages people to actively help out and provide feedback for others, which is how, you could say, most effective learning usually happens, as the numbers go (at least as i'd think). not saying your analysis or feedback wouldn't be appreciated, but as you said, you're testing out the market, and i'm giving feedback for what i think would be helpful, and i still think something that runs along the lines of reinforcement and such could be good, but i might add that it's usually not the knowledge of something that makes people do something, but the understanding that may come with it. i'd put my focus there more.

In my view, the inconvenient, unavoidable reality of it is, if you'd like to be legitimately, functionally influenced by empirically accurate psychology, you're going to have to spend a wealth of time reading material that most consider rather dry, dense, and unpopular [and will probably require a philosophical conversion to some variation of empiricism/determinism].

That being said, I'd highly recommend these books by B. F. Skinner:

Furthermore, if you'd like to be influenced by post-Skinnerian psychologists, individuals whom have cleaned up several of his philosophical errors, expanded upon essentials, and developed his techniques, I'd recommend these textbooks [yes, textbooks, as I said, dry and dense] as well:

I'd also recommend experiencing Randian epistemology as a complimentary influence:

Both Skinner and Rand are simultaneously empiricistic and rationalistic in their view, both hold varying degrees of determinism [Rand was really more a compatibilist, even though she'll foolhardily assert the validity of free will like the color of the sky, one of her many flaws, but then again, all philosophers have them], and they compliment each other well [Skinner concentrated on the world of the environment, Rand on the world of the individual, while both recognized and criticized the other's world].
When experiencing any philosophical text, having
1. the courage to disagree, and
2. the dedication to construct and articulate that disagreement,
are paramount [especially when experiencing Skinner and Rand].

i am trying to create a brief overview of some things I find easy to relate to melee, there are procedures i would not go over because they dont apply. I will assume people that want more information are smart enough to use google
