Bar with Smash Emblems in SSE

Okay, what the heck is the bar on the left side of the screen in SSE? The one in this picture:

I had previously assumed that it was the method of powering up, so I waited patiently for Sakurai to reveal it to us.

Now I don't know what to believe! Any ideas?

That's the name of the enemy they last hit and how much health he has left.

I doubt that. It looks like trophy bases are just plain items. I've seen no indication that you can store them up and use them later... But who knows, your guess is as good as mine!

This is what I figured it was too, but then I looked at the update and the number of symbols doesn't change after they throw the stand. It's possible, however, that the number goes down as soon as you equip it, because the picture only shows from equipped onwards.

Probably an objective of that stage. Like you have to kill that many of the enemy.

I was thinking that maybe it's the difficulty level. You know, like the 2 emblems mean it's on Normal Mode, and it can fit up to 5 for Intense...

I think that it is how many characters you have that can be used. This would also seem to be lives becauses thats how many characters you have left for that lvl. So say you start off and are fighting the first boss you only have two characters so only two lives. But once you save Zelda and Peach you gain those two symbols on the side.

which judging by the pick would then imply that you could have to up to 4-5 characters playing at once. I doubt it's the characters.

No, they're your lives. More specifically, your remaining lives. Watch 2:35 of the video I linked earlier, or any of the Subspace videos hosted by Gametrailers for that matter. You'd see that it's definitely not a remaining enemy count.
