I assume you're talking about online play? The reason for bans is to keep people from negatively affecting another person's playtime. Yes they may be unnecessary, but in other cases they are warranted.

They're all neccesary:
No DC bans? People can do what they do in SSF2 but worse due to winrates: Send us both back to Home screen, keep your winrate from rising and theirs from lowering. In addition, people can quit right when they'll die. With this on, they can still do that but they have like a 5 frame opening, rather than the whole match. Winrates will be 100%, and the meaner person decides your fate. This one would be horrible if it was here, and horrible if it isn't either way, you lose either via gameplay experiece or gameplay time.

No targetting? Taunt parties: Where everyone taunts, and if you attack, you get ganged on. Or where people gang on you for using Little Ma cor Ganon.

No cheating? Self explanatory.

No baseless reporting? Report spam, and nobody gets banned because of congestion. And if someone reports you for using LM, you actually have a chance of being banned.

No idling? This one isn't so bad, but we came for a fight. Not for Luigi-imitators.

It sucks, I know. But they have to be there.

There's many times I just want to leave because of some Lag. I don't mind someone leaving at least I don't have to deal with a half-assed fight or something. If I am dealing with some obnoxious 12 year old who doesn't want to play seriously I should be able to leave without getting punished. That or people just suicide. Still the ban timer thing is stupid.

If it wasn't there, they wouldn't "lose" a single fight because people would just DC before they die. Online would literally be unplayable because few people would be willing to take a loss.

Look at all the games that allow you to leave. But in Smash 4 there's no public archived records, so really just who even cares whether you lose. It's not like Sakurai keeps a secret list of players by how much they win.

but why can't we just have so if you leave the other automatically wins? it would be fair
that's my most common ban and I think this will be better

this^

this thing actually happened in older DS games back when nintnedo just jumped into the world of online. The biggest offender was Metroid prime hunters where people found an exploit to never have the game count a "loss" for em so their hunter rank would never go down. After that exploit was found people would safe D/C all the time, often after getting killed just once in a match. It started to make Hunters online completely unplayable unless you were strictly playing with friends and/or players on your "rivals" list.

that wouldn't really work as well honestly. there would still be people who don't care as much about their win/loss rate, and would D/c. Also remember that in for fun mode, there is no stats kept, so sore losers, taunt parties, and triple/double teaming would run rampant again, because there would literally be no punishment for those actions in for fun mode. Banning is supposed to re-inforce the fact that these types of behaviors aren't tolerated.

Let's see: Those who don't give a s*** about their W/L ratio will just quit a losing match just to go to another. In FF, there are no records, so you could do stuff like taunt parties, and ganging up with no punishment. Even if you kept the other bans, they could just leave when they're tired, and no records are kept of the ban if they go overboard.

FG 1v1 would still be unplayable. Why? Because they can quit, and force you back to the home screen. If they kept the CPU, there would still be no reason to play, because fighting lvl 3 CPUs gets boring fast.

When someone quits in FG 1 on 1 it doesn't send you to the homescreen. It just replaces them with a ****ty bot just like in 2 v 2 or group that is easily killable.

And then, a loss isn't guaranteed. It's more incentive to go away because you have a almost 0 but not 0% chance of winning. there were times when the guy went away just as I was knocked offstage as mac, meaning I lost, but he didn't, and he got a 14 second ban to deal with. Why 14 seconds? Because sometimes quitting gives you a meaninglessly long ban instead of the full 10-20 minutes.

Anyways, they can't just make both sides lose, like ever, and in addition, sometimes in bad connection, the match ends in No Contest for you. They can get that to happen by unplugging the internet router and get a 14 second ban, however where doing the same on 3DS always gives 10, or 20 minute ban. You don't get banned, but you're still back at homescreen, and you still didn't win.
