balanced tournament ruleset

zicore and myself were discussing what would be a fair ruleset for a tourney we want to host. here's what we came up with

this is for 1v1

Options

OFF -One hit kills
OFF -Slow motion (on, off, smart)
OFF -Fast movement
OFF -Display team

ON -No Radar *
ON -No Auto-Aim
ON -No Player Highlight

??? -No Pickup Highlight

* obviously screenlooking would negate this somewhat but that comes with level knowledge which I think is important, so radar off.

Questioning pickup highlight, not that its a huge deal either way.

Arenas

Before each set each player bans 2 levels from the set

Area 52
Base
Car Park
Complex
Facility*
Fortress
G5
Grid
Pipes
Ravine
Ruins
Sewers
Skedar
Temple
Villa
Warehouse

*No stages are autobanned even though Facility leads to massive camping

First level will be RANDOM unless agreed upon. Reset if you random a stage banned. No "Neutral" system but if one was in place, G5/Skedar/Complex/Grid would suffice. There's no random stage options however so this would likely not work.

Weapons

First match each player picks THREE weapons. then each player gets to change ONE of the opponents weapons to "Disabled" (NOT None, as None leaves empty spots on a map, while disabled scatters available weapons throughout the empty spots)

So each game would have four weapons (unless you choose to not ban a weapon for whatever reason).

NO REPEAT WEAPONS! otherwise i could pick Farsight, Farsight, Farsight. oooof.

No weapons are banned. Tricks such as Combat knifing a corpse to **** up their next life is a VALID TACTIC, no weapon johnz

Limits

First to 5 points
10 Minute Timer *

this way you can't camp if you don't have a lead.

* YOU HAVE TO HIT START THE MOMENT "PRESS START" appears. stalling in death screen will cost you the match

Player Handicaps

100% health for all players

Simulants

this could actually get interesting, but I would have them OFF for now. (one normalsim / team would be really strategic using the orders you can give them. will do more testing w/ it)

Counterpicks

Sets are 2/3 (3/5 finals).

Loser picks Arena and 4 weapons. Then winner picks 2 weapons. then they each ban 1 of the opponents weapons (change to disabled)

repeat until set is finished.

Extra Stuff

- Any character combo is ALLOWED! Bring on the alien body/human head combos people!

- i dont care if you want paintball mode or not. preference.

how is skedar more neutral than villa???? anyways you should throw villa and some other decent stage (pipes?) on and just roll a die for random.

I say we do this at spikesden3 (or 4 if we do 3 for break dem *******), except with a split TV setup so no screen watching can occur. That **** would be godly.

true I have skewed views towards skedar cause I played it so much. either way though you can't disable random stages so you'd have to restart a LOT. hmm. we'll come up with something

edit: oh i didn't see the die part. that's a great idea! we could have 6 randoms

yeah that would be great, though weapons like laptop and dragon would suddenly get about 5x better.

I'm also starting to think a timer would almost be a bad idea, you could run away from people infinitely on a lot of maps. stupid stuff. i dunno, maybe we need some sort of rules in place or a way to judge that sort of thing. matches going into 40 min cause people want to camp would suck though

If such a tournament happened I would be there with about 5/6 others.

I'm not even kidding.

then a player can disable laptop or pick k9 on dragons :lick: IMO you should figure out a "neutral" weaponset for the first game and then do advanced slob for the weapons. Loser picks stage, winner picks weapons, loser picks weapons, winner disables weapon, loser disables weapon. Character counterpicks, while valid (ex, tall people's heads glitching through the top of ducts), would take too long and we should probably force people to stick to one character, picked at the beginning of the tournament (secretly up until game 1, if possible).

an idea on camping: Turn off timer but throw in a neutral meatsim and make it first to 10. This means strict camping will NEVER win a game, but still keeps a defensive balance, considering a player who dies will have a harder time getting the meatsim. 10 points also gives enough wiggle room to catch up to someone who gets some lucky spawns.
no radar or screenwatching means huge mindgames/strategic potential around that meatsim :lick:

that meatsim idea is CRAZY, and pretty interesting. gonna need to test it out

now that i think about it, if we do manage the split TVs thing then running away from somebody would be pretty impossible (especially with no radar).

neutral weaponset... hmm

Falcon 2 Scope
Magsec-4
357 Magnum
CMP 150
Disabled
Disabled

double CMPs might be a bit powerful though in a set like that

probably a bad set. i need some ideas.

we used to do

Falcon 2 Silenced
Falcon 2 Scope
Magsec 4
LX Magnum
Phoenix
Mauler

lots more firepower all around, double Maulers being probably best. you could switch out one of the falcons for a CMP too, or maybe a cyclone or something

edit: i still think I like 3/3 and 1 ban each for 1st match. if somebody can come up with a sweet neutral wepset that would be cool though

yea double cmp is way too good for neutral. try this:

Falcon 2 silenced
Magsec4
Magsec4
Sniper Rifle
Shotgun
Falcon 2 silenced

Everything is there for a reason and each gun has its own use. Falcon is good all-around but best at mid range. Magsec is close/mid. Sniper rifle is the only long range (magsec has a scope but its the magsec for christs sake). Shotgun is close range ONLY, oh my god I forgot how crushingly bad this is anywhere but 2 feet away. But, it kills in one shot so it's basically the gun to use if you manage to sneak up behind someone, or in an area with lots of corners to turn. No use for Disabled as there's no need to randomly get a second spawn of a situational gun.

I chose the slots I did because they seem to line up with certain levels pretty well. Give it a try.

I tried to think of better angles to the meatsim theory but there's really no good way around camping. Seriously, I can't imagine a good area 52 or facility match without it. Also requesting that the n-bomb be auto-banned because... come on....

zicore and I did the "neutral" weaponset yesterday on Complex and it seemed pretty solid. Shotgun is a lot better than I thought, to me at least (zicore insists that it's trash). Then we did devastator/dragon/dy357lx/phoenix/mauler/cmp150 and I killed myself like 10 times :( but I think the meatsim idea might be pretty valid as we had a ton of pointless standoffs. Cosmo you should do more testing cause you know a lot more about this game; I'm really rusty, especially with regard to the competitive aspects.

i'll definitely get some good testing in tomorrow with zicore and wicky, your neutral weaponset seems SUPER solid. i will mostly be testing the meatsim idea.
