Balanced Brawl Tournament Viability?

Hey guys I was just thinking. Brawl is definitely not the most balanced game, but we play competitively regardless (and I love that dedication our community has). What I'm wondering is, there are countless attempts to make Brawl more competitively viable while still keeping it brawl-like. Balanced Brawl is the best example. Balanced Brawl doesn't change the physics (like Brawl+) It only changes the characters, and stages to be more competitively viable. So my question to you guys is "If they use the exact same physics (without tripping) then why don't we host tournaments with this more balanced version of the game we love? It's practically like if UMVC3 got a balance patch, the community for that game would use it. So why don't we use our balance patch?

TL;DR BBrawl is a different game, not a balance patch.

If you want to host BB tournaments, go ahead. Nobody's stopping you.

This seems to be where the problem lies. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like you're trying to suggest that we play BBrawl instead of vBrawl (regular Brawl).
Regardless of what you think is more or less competitive, there will always be people that want to play one version over the other, and it isn't right to try to tell people what they 'should' play, or try to replace the game they want to play.

Treat BBrawl as a completely different game from vBrawl, not a different version of the same game. If you want to promote BBrawl as a competitive game, that's more than fine.
If you attempt to infringe on vBrawl's place in competitive gaming, you're crossing a line.

Adding onto what V115 said above me, there's also an accessibility issue with enforcing BBrawl over vanilla Brawl.

Making BBrawl the standard will require all setups to be softmodded with an SD card containing the most recent update. That presents 3 individual problems. While I'd assume most competitive Brawlers have a softmodded Wii, that's not really up everyone's alley, especially when it comes to attracting newer players who have never even heard of Gecko walking into a tournament and having to learn a different version of the game they already play. I don't even have a modded Wii out of laziness. Not only that, but I walked into Radio Shack the other day and the lowest memory SD card they had was 4GB. 4GB+ cards don't even work with Gecko. Riivolution is another story but I'll be damned if I'm getting off my ass to figure out how that works. Then you have to count on everyone having an appropriate SD card on a softmodded Wii and having downloaded the most recent update. Not a big issue if BBrawl is the main game, but most of us know how disorganized smashers can be.

Yeah I see what you mean.

I'm not saying we shouldn't play VBrawl. I love VBrawl I was just curious why I don't see that many people playing more balanced version of it.

I wish Brawl- actually did make the game an UMvC3 Brawl edition. Instead it makes everything super power and everything is ridiculously easy, making the game require very little skill compared to Brawl.

Brawl minus is actually terrible, the game is incredibly easy, and the matchups have no depth because all the characters are really linear (spam your broken stuff because...it's broken, and then have some easy mode combos out of that broken stuff).

I'd rather play MK dittos in vBrawl all day.

As for BBrawl, the competitive merit of the game doesn't really matter since it's a mod, which means it's incredibly hard to have it be the tournament standard everywhere (think about how hard it is to get regions to have a similar stagelist/timer, and then amplify that 100x times to make a mod the standard, as well as adding all the issues with new players not being able to play the game that's on their Brawl disc)
And unlike other mods such as Brawl+ in the past and now Project:M, it doesn't differentiate itself enough for it to be worth holding a side tourney for it at majors.
And really, in the end it's just a balance patch made by a few randoms, everyone has different opinions on how to balance different characters and would disagree with a lot of the changes in BBrawl because of that.

Not sure if you guys are aware of the fact that Minus is being revamped, but I'm pretty sure you guys are understating its competitive viability. Even in the previous builds I found it to have competitive depth (I competed in multiple events for it), even if some match ups end up being degenerate (not like that never happens in vBrawl anyways).

But this isn't really a thread about Minus so I'll leave it alone.

Well said Ghostbone. That's exactly what I think about Brawl-. Just spam your characters "thing" and win. There is no depth even through there is huge potential because it's the only interesting Brawl mod out there.
